DVX100B - Help UPREZ using Instant HD

Hi,

This is my situation ...

I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. I have the Magic Bullet "Instant HD" Plug-In installed. What im needing to know is what is the correct way to UpRez using the plugin "Instant HD" -- I'm using a DVX100B as my source footage, shot in the "Squeeze" mode. I capture my footage no problems. When i create a new project, i select "HDV" and the 720 30p option as my timeline layout. As i stated previously, my source footage is from a DVX100B SD shot in "Squeeze" in 30 Progressive.

When i drop my footage on the timeline it does not fit the frame. it has pillar bars around it. I then select in hte effects menu, the "Instant HD" option. i drag and drop it onto my footage. in the "Instant HD" options i chose 1280x720 NTSC DV Widescreen. However, after applying this it still does not fill the frame? Still remains the pillar-bars. The only option that remains is to choose a different Output size in which i select 1920x1080 NTSC DV Widescreen. This option FILLS the frame completely but i lose some video in the process. Meaning some video is lost out of frame. Not much but it is noticeable.

I can get the frame filled using the 1280x720 NTSC DV Widescreen option in the "Instant HD" options, only if i right click on the footage and select "Scale to Frame Size" -- This seems to be what im aiming for, but is this the proper way? Or im i waaaay off here?

I would appreciate any help reagarding this matter.

Thanks!

Jason

Hey Jason.

I have not taken it as far as you have, but I can tell you this. From a logic standpoint, you are going to have to apply Instant HD at a different point. The first thing that I learned about squeeze footage is that it is still 480p, 4:3 no matter what you do so your initial project settings should reflect that. You should then edit it as if it was shot without the squeeze mode. then at the end export it with QuickTime Movie settings. Here is the catch. You should select "Custom" in the export settings and select 1280x720p. The squeezed look is eliminated by the export settings, not the project settings. Do exactly as you would do with a regular project, and don't even select widescreen. Just regular. If you can, apply the Instant HD at a different point. If there's a standalone version of the plug-in, you might want to try that if it automatically stretches it. I shoot with the DVX-100b and edit with Avid Media Composer. My video card will not let me even open Instant HD. Have to get another workstation...

Actually, it has been my experience that squeeze becomes 16x9 and there is a drop in resolution. Squeeze mode looks the same as if you were to shoot 4:3 and scale up the footage to fit a 16x9 frame. The benefit of squeeze being that you can import as 16:9 and edit accordingly. As for your instant hd problem, have you tried it in a 1080p timeline?
