I just started filming and I'm looking for the better camera to make film videos with. I'm mostly going to be filming skits and other stuff like that. Which is better?
I've used them both, and while the pd170 is a solid older camera with a great reputation, the DVX100A is a good bit newer and has far more features that you'll want for what it sounds like you plan on using it for.
The PD170 only films in 60i, while the DVX has 60i, 30P, 24P, and 24pA, not to mention a whole slew of settings with which you can manipulate your image. Since you're somewhat new to this, and while the DVX is no varicam, the extra settings and menu options will allow to learn alot about basic in-camera image manipulation that will come in handy further down the road.
The DVX should cost a bit more, but it's still the better choice as long as the price premium is within reason.
I own both and depending on what you are shooting the PD is much more durable and you can still get parts for it. More and more parts are becoming unavaliable for the DVX, I have had a nightmarish time with the Panasonic Parts Dept. For me, the availiablity of replacement parts would be the deciding factor. One small problem with the DVX and you have a very expensive paperweight.
