DVX100ae - is there anything it can do that you can't do in post...

don't you have any friends in the state who could buy it here and if you ever had a real problem you could send it to the friend to bring it in for repair??

Hey Justin

What's the deal with the mack warranties? I haven't heard that term before. When I bought my DVX I asked the question, if I have a problem with this camera and I'm not in Australia, can I take it in for repair wherever I am, and the answer was yes. That was very important for me because I'm planning to travel with the camera and wouldn't want to be forced to cut a trip short and return home just because I had a camera problem that required servicing. I can't see why we couldn't send a camera bought in the States in for service locally. I'd love to know what you've been told to the contrary.

the way mack works depends on the local company - in these regards - rexel.

normally what would happen is u send a 'letter' to mack regarding the problem, they tell u weather they will cover or not - u take to your local authorised repairer - and get them to fix - the issue arrives when the local repair/company (rexel) says they will not accept MACKs warranty (someone posted here that they contacted Rexel, and Rexel had no idea about what Mack was and would not take their warranty) - and as such u have to pay for the service, and then send the invoice to mack who will pay u back...

in theory it all works welll - but it's a hoop i'd pref not to jump through unfortunately...

this is how it works as far as i know anyhow....

BTW - how is your camera? did u get it fixed under the warranty?

O and Matthew - unfortunately not...

anyway after doing some calculations - i have found that with the package i am offered i will 'only' lose around 3-500$AU - for the piece of mind

Hey Justin

Thanks for the warning on the Mack warranties - I did some searching and it seems like people have had pretty poor experiences with them. One to be avoided I think.

I've been checking out insurance since my accident, and I reckon that sounds like a much better option. If only I'd realised you could cover your camera with your household contents insurance BEFORE!! I thought it was just for stuff inside your house, not things you took away with you. Stupid me. Anyway, I think it sounds pretty good because you can get cover for accidental damage, so unlike a warranty they are not going to decide that they won't cover the camera because you dropped it or knocked over the tripod or whatever. Assuming you can trust the insurance company, of course!

What deal did you end up getting on your camera, Justin?

i have EVERYTHING i've ever bought from evs and b&h listed with a copy of the invoice with our homeowners policy.

what i worry about is that i am strictly non-commercial with the shorts and things i work on, but sometime i help out a friend with something commercial or say i have my two dvx's setup and were working on location at an outdoor shoot and some moron runs over the curb and crashes half my stuff, isn't that going to look like a commercial movie shoot to the cop who rights the report and to the insurance adjuster who reads it?

matthew

I guess you should be covered by your friend's insurance on the commercial shoot. If your friend doesn't have insurance for his professional shoots then you need to get him to provide you with some kind of guarantee that any damage to your gear of that nature will be fixed at no cost to you - after all, you're helping him out. It's a tricky area though, with friends. Probably one of the easier ways to lose a friend is to end up with a situation where you feel he owes you and he refuses to pay.

If it's just a big shoot, but not commercial, then I guess you just try to be really firm in arguing your case with the insurance company and insisting that it was only a short film or whatever. Unfortunately in the end it all depends on the reliability of the insurance company !

Fritz I decided to go with the australia deal with the package I told you about - only thing is I'm still waiting for the camera to come in - until i have it in my hands, I don't know if the sales person will change his mind etc.....

I know i can go to other dealers - but it'll just be a piss off running around etc...

Anywa, lemme know what happened with your DVX Fritz - did it suddenly come back to life? or are u still waiting for rexel to give you an answer on weather they will cover or not?

BTW when u did the home owners insurance thing, how much did it cost - and do u know if it will cover goods purchased from OS?

DVX100a - $5300 (2yr warantty)
?

where did you get that price from? its a good $1000 under what its sold for in Australia, make sure its a registred panasonic dealer, caus if its someone who imports form overseas that warantty may not be servicable in australia and you could have to wait a long time if it breaks down and you have to send it overseas.

didnt i point this out? i thought i did - basically found out the person was importing them and then reselling - what really pissed me off was that they said all u had to do was return to panasonic for problems....

i think in the end - they just imported it ...
