DVX100ae - is there anything it can do that you can't do in post...

hey guys & gals have been trawling this forum and other for AGES... and while i have read WONDERFUL things, I have one major question... as seen in the topic...

I was looking that 3 cameras...

DVX100a - $5300 (2yr warantty)
PD170 - $5250 (1yr warantty)
XL2 - 6250 (2yr warantty)

So what i want to know is...

are there any features that this camera can do, that I can not do in post... IE like the 25P - would this be the same as me filming something on the PD170 and deinterlacing or using some prog like magic bullet (not that i can afford it, but i know people who work at production offices, so i can use them late at night :))

I know there are those features like gamma and stuff (which i probably won't really understand the extent of until i see the camera for myself), but generally i don't want to stuff around with cameras too much incase i change my mind... BUT are these like things i would not be able to achieve otherwise?

Justin, in leu of a gigantic post, I suggest you do a search on the comparisons between the three cameras & yes there is bucket loads of features that the DVX can handle that post production won't do.

basically you can do most things with any of these cameras. question is: why bother sitting many late hours at magic bullet, when you could have been done at 3pm?

Short answer... footage shot by a native progressive scan camera such as the DVX will have higher resolution than footage that 60i footage that is de-interlaced in post.

You're asking a bunch of DVX owners, and overall we're pretty happy with the camera. That should tell you something.

I think the DVX picture quality is better than the PD170, except in very low light situations. Progressive really gives you a film look (instead of a TV look). I've heard some good things about the XL2, but not enough for me to consider switching.

If it's only $50Aus difference between the PD-170 and the DVX, how is that even a question mark?

Just wanted to ask this Q.... to be honest with you, i never really heard or even though of purchasing this camera until i ACCIDENTALLY came across this site and thought WOW - it has not taken off at all in Australia...

In saying that, i am guessing u are stating that the DVX generally costs more than the pd170 and in your choice is a better option?

Now the reason for my post... I did post in another forum and the reply i got was that it was not worth it, and that the 'modes' where just things which could be done in post...

now you ask WHY I would wanna do in post as oppose to in camera and save time.. with me, due to lack of actual experience and such, I generally am not 100% decided on the type of look until i have seen my options - IE working in post at my 'leasure' - i think as i do get more experience I will be more inclined to do it in camera and perhaps (so to furture proof myself, i should get this - 'convincing myself hehe')

the main reason i am asking in comparison to the PD170 is because, well, i was pretty much about to purchase it 1 wk ago after going through numerous posts etc until i realised the package I wanted, was no longer available....

Reason i wanted to the pd170 (i know its silly) but one 'everyone' was getting them and they were happy with them, the other reason is the low light shooting...

what else.... well there is more, but well i won't bog u down with it, i guess i just want reassurance that there is nothing the PD170 can do that this camera can before i buy...hehe im very indecisive i guess :)

o side note - after reading about the manual rings and such on the xl2 - i have decided against that....

ONE last thing

i see there are some great deals to be had with the camera in the US - anyone know of any in Australia :) Jan - got a contact for me in Australia eheh

thx guys....

Hi Nirimba... great to more than just a couple of aussies here :)

just took at look at their site... wow, didn't realise the price - might give my source a call tomorrow to confirm the price i was given... WOW...

Where did these prices come from? Evsonline has them for:

DVX100a - $3449 + $129 for 2-year warranty
PD170 - $3194 + $129 for 2-year warranty
XL2 -$4294 + $??? for 2-year warranty

justin, the DVX can shoot 60i- 30p- 24pa and 24pn withor without both cinegamma and cinematrix.

the pd170 can shoot 60i so if your undecided on what "look" you want or need

it would makes sense to go with the camera that offeres you the most choices for "looks" being progressive frames rates. progressive and interlaced recording, and "cine" processing options . the xl2 is also a nice camera though. between the DVX and XL2 youll have to decide what best suits you becuase they both offere similar things, but have seperate strgths and weaknesses. the pd170 is a waste of your time for considering IMHO.

The DVX100AE shoots at 50i or 25p. (Justin is in Australia.)

Justin, I brought up the price difference because the DVX is far more feature-rich than the PD-170, and that’s generally reflected in a US price difference of $250-$400, with the DVX being that much more expensive. You listed Australian prices, which in USD terms is more like a $40 difference. I was taking your question to mean “is the difference between the cameras worth the cost; i.e., if I spend less on the PD-170, will I wish I would have gone with the DVX? Can I do in post what the DVX does in-camera?” – in which case, the price difference being almost negligible, I couldn’t imagine why you’d be thinking PD-170 over the DVX.

This thread is talking about Australian dollars, not US$.

res - i am in Australia - those are australian prices - also i just realised the guy was getting them imported - ie they came with mack warantee not normal warantee - after hearing about the mack warantee issues some people have i'm kinda worried... so not sure if ill go that route...

Justin, call Rexel in Sydney, they are the agent for Panasonic Professional in Ozzie. If they don't sell direct, they will point you in the right direction.

again thx for the reply guys - i am SO keen on getting the dvx now.. for all those asking why i would compare the dvx with the pd170 - to be honest, i never realised the dvx was classed as a higher camera - having only really discovered it recently - i thought they were in the same category so to speak...

i just called a couple of dealers now and the price difference is much more prominent if i buy locally unfortunately (around the $6000 range...) now i've just gotta see how much i can spend... sigh....

Rexel currently have a $7000AUD special for the dvx100ae with tripod, mic, tapes and case.

And ill add my shameless plug that i have my dvx100ae for sale in the FS section of the boards for a very good price. :)

i considered that - but then the whole waranty/mack thing worries me - main reason i do not buy from any of those importing places...
