Re: DVX100a so much better than XL1s

I always thought it was funny that over on the Canon forums, people are all excited about the XL2, and all sorts of rumers have come out for the last 3 years. The feeling that I get from these people however is that since they can't wait for the xl2 to come out, they buy the xl1s. Ok, and since they own the xl1s it seems like all they can talk about is how great the xl2 will be. Do they think that since they own an xl1s that they can automatically upgrade to the xl2 "vaporware" that will be the "greatest camera ever". They still will have to pay the 5G's like everybody else, so why the big stink. I guess if you just can't be happy about the camera that you already have, then you have a bigger problem. Look at the dvx, when the upgraded model came out, there were people who were pissed off "it just came out, it is perfect, why upgrade?". Many people didn't need to upgrade to the 100a, and really, no one seems to care when the next dvx200 or whatever will come out. Why? because the Pani rocks already!!!! yeah.

Re: DVX100a so much better than XL1s

Exactly. I was totally content in knowing the DVX 'sequel' was coming out. Im totally stoked on the little original.

Re: DVX100a so much better than XL1s

Not that this matters much...But can you imagine what new members/guests think when they read a thread like this? If they didn't know what a great bunch of people we had here, they might just move on thinking that we're a bunch of kids arguing about who's is bigger.

Just trying to think about this from another point of view. I personally think that anyone that does their research and tests the cameras out will make a logical decision. People that purchase because a bunch of people on the Internet post, "This camera "SUX/RULEZ" are probably not your video geniuses anyway.

John,

You're right.  I should have just kept my mouth shut and moved on to a different subject.  My wife continually gives me the ol', if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it speech.  I guess it was rubbing off today.

Andrew, actually many of us feel as you do about the "sux/rulz" thing.

However, its still nice to be able to throw out an opinion and get an amen... regardless of what new members/guests may think.

No worries at all and you are correct :P I meant it more as in STRIPES "Lighten up......... (Insert Name)" and not has hard as the written word comes across.

It's true; I bet some people come in here and think "What a bunch of maniacs".

It's like Cheers; we hang around long enough and we all start to know the real person (virtually).

:D

Funny, my wife says the same thing. It's that Venus thing.

Besides, re: the DVX's superiority to the XL1, in the words of the Bambino:

It ain't braggin' if you really done it.

Re: DVX100a so much better than XL1s

I think the DVX-100 is by far a better camera, output wise, but when you're shooting run and gun, the XL1 is better. Ergonomically, the XL1-s while not being as balanced good as more rigid ENG cameras, beats the stability of holding the VDX-100 on the palm. HOw long can you shoot a guy tight bust shot, 15 ft away on the DVX-100? 5, 6 minutes? The Xl1, you could shoot for hours, (if the batterys didn't run out every hour as they do!!) If ALL the shots are static tripod shots, then I would easily go with the DVX-100. Not all my shoots are this type so I still HAVE to use my XL1-s, though the picture of it disgusts me out. Considering that, the XL1 still has some use, in my opinion.

That's sorta why I'm looking forward to the one Panasonic showed in NAB 2004. The handle grip could make a big difference. Not as good as a shoulder mount cam, but should be nice.

Re: DVX100a so much better than XL1s

In the begining I used The XL1,and XL1S and have shot hundreds of hours with both of them. Ive used them in commercials, weddings, shorts, features, and have used almost all of the available lenses. Ive have also shot interlaced and "Frame Mode". Not to mention running the gammut of "Film Look" programs. Then it came time to get a new camera. I was talking to a DP friend of mine from LA and he told me about the DVX 100(A) model. I did some research and returned to him and said "It seems cool with 24p but what about the lens issue? (Not changable) Then we decided that if it came down to it we could just use the mini 35 adapter. (better shallow depth of field anyway). Ok long story short, I did get a Dvx100A................................I LOVE IT!
With a good mattebox, follow foccus, and lcd shade, this little bad boy rocks even more! ;D. Ok second part of the story,we did a side by side comparison to the XL1 an DVX100A both with the mini 35 adapter on them and the results were astonishing. The DVX had such a better picture compared to the XL1 and so many other things if I typed them all I would be here all night. And comparing just the cameras .........same thing. The DVX image just looked better. So in the future I will pass on the XL1. Now before every one jumps up and down I just want to leave you all with this. Yes the DVX in my opinion is better than the XL1. Its advanced picture aqusition optons are far better on the DVX.............BUT........I truly belive that you could have the best camera on the face of the planet, but if you dont know how to use it what good is it anyway! :D Hey Dima, study hard and practice shooting, go make your short this summer and return to school next fall. Your hard work will be all the evidence you need. Later make it big in the biz and hire that jerk to get your coffee .

Re: DVX100a so much better than XL1s

I bought DVX100 right before it became ubiquitous (December 2002). I had the same experience this high school kid had in his class- only in my case it was in a famous film school classroom. People said it still looks like video, XL1 is better, XL2 and GL3(???) will be 24p, Sony's VX2100/PD170 will be 24p. Panasonic is dumb... I didn't get offended because they didn't know what they were talking about.

It was not long after when all those people would come to and beg me for the use of my camera, and many of them invested on their own units.

But please recognize that most of those cameras, if not all, from Sony, Canon and JVC are great, too. I have spoken to engineers from all the companies, especially those at Sony, and they did admit that DVX100 is a great camera all around.

I love my DVX100 since the day I bought it, but was always aware of its weakness, too (being DV25 and all, not HD or definitely not film). But c'mon.. DVX100 is a great toy, and now I used it for small stuff, tests, and location scouting.

To all you DVX users: I strongly recommend testing every film stocks with various lenses outthere to enhance your DV ability if 24p/filmic look is what you are after. You have to know what you are after in order to imitate them.

Thanks.
