DVX100A as S-video out

I have just learned that I can view my NLE cuts on my regular television set by hooking firewire from my laptop to my DVX100A and then using the S-video on the DVX100A out to the TV. Basically I'd like to use my TV as a "low-end NTSC monitor" while editing.

Anyone ever done this? I presume it doesn't do anything to the camera's hour meter, since it's being used as a "pass-through" device and the heads are not activated.

I'm not sure what I do to get the signal to go through the firewire to the camera. Probably have it in VCR mode. And then...?

Any help appreciated. Cheers.

Yes lots of people do this but most of them use a cheap 400-600 dollar camcorder to do it so they don't accidentally fry the firewire port of the dvx.(it's been known to happen) Also what NLE are you using? In premiere you just go to the dv device settings and set it output to dv hardware and hook the camera up to the computer in VCR mode and play your file

Sure it will work as Wolf stated. One thing you will notice is a very, very slight delay. You would really only notice it if you also hook up the audio outputs to the TV and listen to the TV audio and your computer audio at the same time. I'm talking like 1/3 or 1/4 of a second, not much.

I'm using Avid Xpress. Thanks for the advice. I do have a cheap camcorder for a deck. It doesn't have an s-video out. Just one of those smaller jacks that I can connect to a TV with a composite video cable.

Composite, for all intensive purposes, works (almost) just as well as S-video.

Normally I don't even bother with S-video, just to keep it simple. If it was that critical I'd use gear with Component connections.

Especially as you are using a regular TV, I'd definaly use the cheaper cam and Composite instead of risk of hurting you DVX. In fact even with a pro monitor, i'd still use the composite over risking the DVX.

Plus using your "deck" camera will mean no switching cables and give you a monitor allready when you capture.

Excellent advice. I was also given these specific Avid Xpress HD 5.0 settings for anyone interested:

"In 5.x hook the deck up as before and right click on the green/yellow button on the bottom right. Hit 'outpt to DV device', then right click again and hit 'Realtime encoding' That will give you realtime FX output to your deck!

For both versions you need to set your desktop play delay (there is a 1/2 second delay between your laptop monitr and the firefwire out. Desktop Play delay is under the settigns tab of the project window. Set it to about 14, then play the timeline near a cut. if you watch both screen, change the delay until the cut in your video is at the same time on both monitors

This is how i work on my non mojo system at work. THe only downside is that when you scrub the delay comes back into the video... So when scrubbing look at your laptop screen."
