DVX100A and HVX200

New to DVXuser but have been reading a lot. I have a DVX100A and have been shooting for 4 years. I am also working in FCP5 - 5 and doing the upgrade to 5.0.1 and now working on a Mac Pro with a lot of storage and ram. I am going to purchase a HVX200 I want to use both cameras in shoots.

Here is my question. I am wondering about shooting with a HVX200 as my main camera for close-up detail and overall performance shots. ( I am shooting Dance recitals in theatres) and the DVX100A for my 2nd camera for full shots. I would then go into FCP and edit and my final output will be to DVDPS. Anyway I am reading enough that says yes I want to purchase the HVX200, The firestore, The marshall, etc. Yes some P2 cards with Panosonics free offer and yes I have also purchased Barry's DVX100A manual and His DVD HVX200 bootcamp. I have not yet gotten his book on the HVX200. So I am basically asking can I use these two cameras together and yield positive combined edited results. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated or a direction to an existing thread would help. Thanks in advance

Yes, you can use both cameras together.

You're delima will be if you one day decide to mix HD and SD footage together. Then it's up to your NLE to handle that.

If you're concerned about shots matching, you may want to reverse the order you're planning on using them. The DVX will do great on closeups, but the HVX will hold more detail in the wide shots. So with your current plan you run the risk of super-sharp closeups and potentially-mushy wide shots; if you reverse that you'll get sharp closeups and sharp wide shots. Might intercut better.

And you'll have to spend some time with a two-input monitor doing live A/B switching between them, and adjusting settings, to get them to match. Just setting them to the same settings will not ensure a matching picture (for example, HVX master pedestal -4 seems to equate to DVX master pedestal -8) so you'll have to take efforts to match the images before shooting.

The reverse shoot order sounds find. I will most likely migrate all efforts to the HVX as I proceed with the newer technology. For reviewing the set-up I was looking at the Marshall Monitor 7" on site to work with the HVX and I have a 9" Ikegami crt for the DVX on site and I have several JVC 15" Hi resolution CRT's. Should I be working both cameras to the CRT for Balance or should I have 2 crts to review each so I don't go blind going back and forth from A to B or will the Marshall suffice for set-up to review against the 9"crt.

By the way thanks for responding. Also your DVD's have been very helpful and very indepth

Ben, Thanks for responding, I will follow-up with some FCP questions once I get into this. Should be interesting. I also apreciate your tutorial on Firestore. Thanks

To calibrate cameras together you definitely want to use one monitor and swap between them with the A/B switch. You have to eliminate as many variables as possible.
