Can I easily/how can I tell if the 1394 board in my dvx100b is indeed Fried, I suspect it is. I have successfully used this port for many a download from this camera in the past but I recently lent it to a buddy who downloaded to his mac (I use a pc) and now that the camera has returned to me the computer will not recognise that I have even plugged anything in ( I suspect he did not heed my warning of plugging in with the camera on ) unless interfacing with a mac has somehow reconfigured it???????

he plugged it in, the camera did not reformat. Reset the camera but it is probably fried

well, I have pushed the tiny reset button as a part of my investigation into this problem, is there any repair shop recommendations??

replacing that can be costly i think...get a cheap comsumer handycam. I use a canon zr900 i think it is. cost me US$200...new.

yup. If you don't chain cameras during shooting this is a good and cheap option. I do believe there are other threads that give a round about of the cost for firewire replacement. Do a quick search or call up Panasonic. I use a cheapo cam as well.

If u do go the repair route...I recommend Robbs Repair. They are in seattle I believe. Excellent service. Email them at robbsrepair@aol.com and ask how much it costs to replace the firewire. I believe its upwards of $800 from the past posts I THINK.

But the cheapo cam will do the trick
