Re: DVX100 takes Cinematography award at Sundance.

Just so I'm clear on this, no anamorphic lens gadetry was used. Native 4:3 was used. Letterboxing was added in post.

Right?

Was it simply letterboxed or was some uprezing to HD/stretching used?

I find it curious that the anamorphic was not used to shoot a film intended to be projected. I am trying to decide wether or not to shoot my own project 4:3 or use the anamorphic. Options, options... :D

Re: DVX100 takes Cinematography award at Sundance.

no anamorphic.. that is right. Dont know if they went to HD.

Its not so abnormal to not shoot anamorphic.. people have been doing it with the XL1 for years without an anamorphic, and the DVX standard has alot more resolution than the XL1.

its easy to forget when you use the anamorphic adapter you are squeezing the image that gets laid down on the CCD. This means instead of 1 pixel line containing 1 line of an image, 1 line is squeezing 1.X lines of image into the same line, so you loose a tad of detail in that line.

Really! Wow! I've been e-mailing with Marcus van Bavel over at dvfilm. And he swears by anamorphic with a PAL dvx100 for the best rez. for film transfer ??? Hey Jarred how come you only have a little white box with a red x for your picture? 8)

Re: DVX100 takes Cinematography award at Sundance.

I just did a transfer with Marcus. Anamorphic all the way, except for the mini35 section. Haven't had a chance to screen it yet.

Bottom line is, if you're going for a widescreen presentation, the anamorphic adapter will deliver far superior results than shooting without it. If you're intending for a film transfer, and trying to match film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio, the anamorphic adapter lets you keep about 96% of your image, cropping only 4% off. Shooting without it, you'll only keep 72% of the image.

Yes, anamorphics squeeze the image, and yes, they're more prone to flare, and yes, there's an overall "smoothing" of the image that goes on. But you're also talking about 25% more resolution! It's a huge difference, visible clearly on the big screen (I've projected SD on a 10' screen, side-by-side using anamorphic vs. using letterbox, and the difference is significant). Using the anamorphic gives you a boost in resolution at least as big as the boost you used to get from shooting in PAL, but with none of the drawbacks.

If you're shooting for the big screen, use the anamorphic adapter -- no question.
