Re: DVX100 takes Cinematography award at Sundance.
HA! Happy about the breakthrough, (and like most of us here probably) mad that I sat on my butt last year when I knew this camera could do it. Could have been Barry and I.
Re: DVX100 takes Cinematography award at Sundance.
..well really it goes to the dp, but to know that the cam had the guts to pull the job off is just awsome. did they use a mini35? ...anamorphic? ...or just the reg dvx ..anyone know?
Re: DVX100 takes Cinematography award at Sundance.
I do.. it was shot by nancy schreiber and I even was told the settings but I cant remember them now.. but it was shot stock except for a chroz mattebox... no ana adapter or other fancy stuff.
Re: DVX100 takes Cinematography award at Sundance.
name is familiar..possibly she did "personal velocity" too right..no-rebecca miller???... must be in tight with indigent..
no ana huh? i wonder how it was shown at sundance, -what type of transfer. possibly hd or wm9? probably cropped in post to 16:9. cmon mr land .. lay down the details!!
..i know that i took the ana off my dvx for the first time in about a year to shoot a commercial last weekend, and it was like lifting a 100 lb weight off my back as far as ease of doing things. evrything was a peice of cake without it on there..
Re: DVX100 takes Cinematography award at Sundance.
thats what im taking about barry!! ive got one in the works for either next year or the following pending i get it done in time.. looking to be more like 2005..
Re: DVX100 takes Cinematography award at Sundance.
Jarred:
I pieced together parts of the asc Schrieber Birns/Sawyer dvx100 promo dvd, ad from American Cinematographer. Looks to me Chrosziel matteb, follow focus adapter, lots of nd combos to challenge dof, sachler, century 1.6 & fisheye. Pretty basic kit. Taped off 16:9 on lcd viewfinder--edited/converted in avid. Shot mostly wide open.
Tape solution is cheap.
100a is making it tough to wait till April to see canon upgrades--maybe not worth the wait; the 100a fills the bill.
Good to see asc types getting on bandwagon. Schrieber is one of maybe dozen or so women of international asc caliber. She gets it. The sundance recognition is more than significant. It shows panasonic is seriously into indie pro dv. They never much competed in Sony/Canon dv/gl/xl game.
Maybe it's time to kill 'prosumer' moniker. Indie pro much better.
Re: DVX100 takes Cinematography award at Sundance.
HEY! Wait a minute! I just checked out your sundance link--not a word about Schrieber!
What gives? Typical.
Like the director shot the film? The dvx jumped out of the box onto the tripod...wheeeeeeeee let's shoot a movie!
Reminds me of looking at American Beauty Mendes/Hall commentary and storyboard review. Didn't take long to realize Mendes was from theatre and Hall from cinema. It's Hall's film as much as Mendes'. Methinks Hall discretely patronized Mendes with his 'alternative' storyboard changes...all of which appeared to have a significant impact on pov and story.
Be nice to see journalists get a clue on the collaborative effort!
Re: DVX100 takes Cinematography award at Sundance.
yeah that is right about the follow focus.. they also used a image2000 box/rods.. but nothing that you cant do with the stock camera, like anamorphic lens or any other custom components.
Funny how they give an award without telling who shot it. I bet if they announced a directors award they wouldnt forget the directors name.
Re: DVX100 takes Cinematography award at Sundance.
I also checked out Land of Plenty links from Indigent Films site. Wim Wenders directs--being shot with 3 dvx. Shot of dvx on what looks to be little suction cup tpod attached to a plywood box.
I've seen that little bogen/suction cup combo. Cheap too!
The director/cinematographer and writer ought to be singled out. It's a serenade.
Jarred, I see lots of good info on the site--the how-to solutions clever. But anyone who has a how-to ought to keep track of where/how much parts cost to pass along. The auto focus thing was good but detailed list better. One or two stop shop--get into it.
Same with follow focus. I looked in a Mcmaster-Carr industrial supply book--if sizes were known probably worth the time to gizmo it together...for a lot less than $1000.
Re: DVX100 takes Cinematography award at Sundance.
Actually, I caught a screening of 'November' on Sunday as the festival was coming to a close.
Think Run Lola Run meets Memento meets Groundhog Day (with a touch of The Sixth Sense thrown in for good measure.) Now take out all of the compelling aspects and you end up with the generally meaningless structure and story of this film -- but it did look great! (Anyone else who had a chance to see it, please feel free to chime in, but I personally found it to be pretty pointless.)
Without giving too much away, it plays through a similar series of events three times. Each 'version' has a different look (mainly hue) to it. At first I was a little dismayed since the first section looks pretty underexposed, washed out, and grimed up with a sort of cool or blue filtering. At first it didn't read so much as an artisitic choice as it did either poorly shot or projected footage. (Perhaps this is a result of having less latitude in shifting the color space in 4:1:1 DV? Anyone know how they did the post on this project?)
The second section is shot a little more traditionally and is a better representation of how the camera looked. On the theatre size screen, projected from what I think was a HiDef uprezed version it looked very good. There was a sequence with everything in red (photo darkroom) where you could see some distinct aliasing but otherwise it looked very clean. Of course, with any of these after a while you acclimate to the image and it's hard to A/B compare it, but I was pretty impressed by how well it held up on a large projection. Like any miniDV stuff it wasn't very strong in wider shots, but the color palette via lighting and set design made for some great shots.
The only points where it was distractingly saying "I'm video!" was when they had something abnormally blow out - specifically, they had a shot of C.Cox in a bathroom where her face is overexposed. It looks like this was done in camera with that gruesome distortion of hue and saturation on her skin that occurs right before it clips to white. Assuming they weren't after this candy colored skin look, I think you could avoid this effect by shooting within the camera's range and clipping the white point in post.
In general, it was definitely encouraging in terms of image quality for a theatrical presentation.
Re: DVX100 takes Cinematography award at Sundance.
I think this is so cool that a movie shot with the DVX100 won for cinematography. It really makes you feel like if you have the right idea and the skills that you can achieve a lot.
