DVX100 over HVX200?

I had to sell my dvx100 in December to pay for school. I now have some money and I'd like to get another camera (by the way school is covered for the next year so I'm not doing anything foolish). Would you suggest I upgrade to a HVX or stick with the DVX100b? Please tell me why you chose what you chose. Please don't chose one over the other, just because you own it. I loved my dvx100b, but boy that HD footage is something!

I'd wait a couple weeks, simply because of NAB and the new release of camcorders coming out this year. Panasonic is offering a "DVX replacement", the HD version of the DVX (NOT the HVX though..). Considering you have some cash, I'd make sure to wait it out and see what progresses in April.

Also, for the price difference, you could probably think about picking up two DVX 100's instead. It would be kinda cool having two of them running.
 
if I had the money, maybe I would get the HVX.
but I'm all right with the DVX.
Because I seen so many good footage from the DVX and I love how it has the like "film look"
everyone is going crazy talking about the best adapter, sharpest image, and moving up to HD.
But I simply ask my self that Film never has sharp image or crispy edges, like the HD camera's, so the DVX is much better for me!!!!

wait can you explain this "DVX Replacment" what's the diffrence between that and the HVX which one would be better and is there a link or a discussion where we can get specifics.

Much appreciated.

Wow! I didn't know there was a replacement coming out. Does panasonic have a website or article about it yet, I would love to learn more about it and to everyone saying that dvx100 gives you more of the film look, I agree, but how many viewers really know true film. lol
 
Hah, to think I was going to respond back to this thread and actually give you a recommendation simply because you asked for an opinion on either one of the cameras. I thought about it and some people have a decision to make right then and there and don't like being told to wait.

I don't believe Panasonic has anything about it on their website, but there is a press release and I'm sure more information will become readily available at NAB in a couple weeks. If you can, I'd do it. I couldn't wait and purchased an XH-A1. I love the camera and in a month, it paid for itself. This will be good enough for me until sometime next year. There's a couple threads going on right now about getting a camera. You should check them out.

Get two DVXs. The HVX is like $5000 and the HMC150 is going to be about the same price as Sony's XDCAM EX. It makes everything so much easier to do a shoot with two of the same cameras rather than one DVX and some rented Sony. For the price of the HMC, you can probably get two DVXs and Series 7 battery kits for them through B&H. That's what I did.
 
JCal - I disagree with you on the price of the HMC150. The HMC150 is supposed to be the DVX REPLACEMENT - not the HVX replacement. How can a camera set to replace a $3500 camera, be $7000? Totally different price ranges. Everything is skepticism of course, but based on the information given I HIGHLY doubt that it will the price of the EX.

On another note, the DVX is a great camera but considering it isn't his first time using prosumer gear, I don't see any reason for him to buy another one. While he may not NEED HD right now, buying an SD camera when you can afford an HD one is a little backwards.

Also, what's all this talk about buying two cameras? What's the purpose of it? It might take a little more time in doing reversals and that kind of thing with short films, music videos etc...but you need the manpower to operate the other camera too. If you're shooting events, having a second camera is good as well and I guess this is just personal preference, but I like working with someone else, even if just to ensure that the camera is functioning properly.

I own the DVX but with that said if I had the loot I would get the HVX but then again we already have a light kit and audio so if you dont have any lights or mics etc. a dvx may be the better option and spend the rest on other things you will need to make films.

I couldnt agree more with the above quote. Exactly why im sticking with the DVX and I couldnt care less about hD. You are spot on my friend.

Just a little curious to how it paid for itself (I know dumb question, but would like to know EXACTLY how). And two cameras really wouldn't be beneficially to me at this time, but thanks for the thought. Oh and someone said something about investing in mics and lighting, that sounds like a good idea, does HD (hvx200) require more light than the good ole dvx100
 
Yes, all HD cameras need more light. The DVX100 is more light sensitive than the HD cameras in the sub $10k price range I believe. Investing in lights and mics is a good idea as well if you didn't previously have that stuff. Do you have a good tripod? These are all additional expenses you have to consider. An HVX will run you quite a bit of money after you buy camera, tripod, mic (even if only a shotgun), carry case, P2 card. A DVX on the other hand, you'd be able to purchase some accessories.

Oh and the XH-A1 paid for itself, because I was hired to shoot an indie feature with it and I got about $3k. I also sold my DVX, so there wasn't really much of a difference but if I hadn't it was pretty close to clearing the cost of my XH-A1.

Oh, I keep forgetting...what exactly are you going to be doing with the camera? Event work, short films, music videos?
 
seriosuly, people confuse the dvx for film all the time, but I have never ever heard someone confuse an hvx for film. The footage I have confused with film was panavision's genesis and the vipercam.
