DVX100 or HDR-FX1 for anti bullying film

Hi,

I'm making an anti-bullying film to be shown at various teacher conferences etc. The equipment I have is limited and sound is going to have to be direct from the mic into the camera I'm shooting on.
I have a choice between the DVX and the sony FX1, the FX1 is hdv but doesn't have XLR's so it seems its going to be a compromise between sound and image. What I'd like to know is what anyone else would do, especially if they have used both cameras, as I don't know in this situation which would suffer most if I went for the other camera.

I've used the DVX a fair bit and what I think basically amounts to the sd version of the FX1 a little, and have never edited hdv.

The final film will be projected on to a fairly large screen, although not cinema size, and could go on to be used at lots of different places - projected at different sizes and used on TVs.

Thanks for your help,

Jack.

DVX. And no, you wont be compromising between sound and image. The only thing the FX1 has that the dvx doesnt is resolution, otherwise, the DVX will kill it 9 times out of 9.5.

Go with what you know - in this case the DVX. Both cameras are fully capable, its ALL about knowing how to use it. HDV resolution is waaay down the list from storyline & execution.

I'm hoping your limited equipment includes a boom op, good sticks, a PA, and, above all, decent actors.

Best wishes.

I would definitely go DVX. I used the FX1 extensively over this last school year, and when I got my hands on the DVX, I couldn't believe how beautiful the image was comparatively. I've had my films screened at theaters, and there was no lack of quality.

Keep in mind that you are on a DVX forum asking which is better the DVX or a Sony. If you go to a Sony forum you might get a different answer. If were on a Chevy forum you think many people would say a Ford is better?

My vote is FX1 with a Beachtec or similar XLR adapter. Actually, my advise is save a little extra and go with a Canon XHA1. I do like the comment that the content is most important. Very true! If I were making a project that I had hoped to show in a number of different settings I would want to make the project the highest resolution I can. Everyone is jumping on the tapeless bandwagon and ditching their A1s. You could pick one up pretty cheap and then be able to archive you footage in HDV and future-proof your project.

FX1 and Z1U, only interlaced no 24 or 25p, hmmmm,, 1080i or 576p, i'll take the DVX.
Although it depends on what kind of image your going for.

Thanks for all the help guys, I'm thinking of going with the DVX - just the greater experience with it probably makes it the right choice.
