DVX100 - Is it the end of this cam ?

In my opinion it´s not. Even with the new HVX200 and its all improvements DVX100 still has a great market and of course great people to use it. I am planing to buy the new cam, but I will have lots of things that I will have to use DVX. So many things that are still in SD, and I can also use both cams. I actually would never stop shooting with my DVX100 for it is almost part of my personal life as a human being and I like to call it my third eye.

For people that don't require HD for their projects, the DVX is still a great camera. It also puts even more low-budgeted filmmakers in the position to purchase the camera used for cheaper than retail from people dumping off their DVX to graduate to something bigger. Although if it were me, I would keep the DVX around as a B-camera

I think there will still be the need for a great camera like the DVX100. From the looks of it a lot of people are still scratching and clawing to get into the DVX 100 price point. The HVX becomes a whole new deal. I have started to purchase upgrades to my systems to be able to handle HD and with camera I'm looking at at least $10k and that's with a decent system in place already. So, many people aren't going to bite on this.

Like JKary stated, this is going to be a good time for people to pick up great DVX's at a great price. I've got one with less than 8 hours on it and I'm sure I will have to sell it for at least a few hundred less than I could have 6 months ago. Great deals to be had.

I see the DVX100 carrying on for a little while at least. At least until the HVX or a verson of it can be found that is even cheaper, especially in regards to things like the P2 cards.

LONG LIVE THE DVX! :)

The DVX is a great SD camera. I don't see why that would change. A pd170 didn't even become a dinosaur yet. The HVX is a good transission camera to (someday...) HDTV, but untill standards are raised, the DVX will be just fine.
If I get a HVX, I'll keep my DVX as a second (spare) cam.
If I sell anything it'll be my TRV-900. :)

Until the country really moves to HD (debatable but clearly still many years away), good SD cameras like the DVX are still a great tool. Certainly no reason to stop using it. OTH if you are buying a camera today, the HVX has definate advantages even in SD to be considered if it falls within your budget.

cheers

Theres always going to be a better piece of technology than the one you have. Its impossible to keep up with technology these days so I don't even try to anymore. By the time the HVX goes down into an affordable price for me there will be a better camera out. I'll Probably use my DVX for another couple of years because the quality looks like film enough to me.

Don't get me wrong, the HVX is a great camera and if I had the money to keep up with this **** I'd buy one. but to even consider the DVX "Dead" is a moron statement. I could own a 35mm motion picture camera and its not gunna make me any better of a filmmaker.

My two cents.

No doubt the DVX is obsolete. But being a nice guy I'll buy old obsolete DVX's in working condition for $100 cash.

You'll love it. As soon as you start shooting with it youll forget all about the HVX.
The DVX is not obsolete.

Im sure you will be satisfied whit your camera Digitally Pleasing .
I like my DVX100AE and if i should bye a new it wold be DVX100BE

I think the guys buying the HVX are mainly those aiming for the HD market. Even though the camera supports DVCPro50, most of the propaganda was around its HD features.

There may be a lot of people interested in the SD part of the camera, but the majority are interested in the HD features it has. I guess, if I am not wrong, that's why they were showing HD footage first.

Almost everybody are asking for HD footage from the camera. I haven't seen many requests to see DVCPro50 footage.

I don't know about you guys, but I see this camera as an HD camera rather than a hybrid.

Are you guys going to use its SD features at all? Maybe some, but I guess there will be quite a few using the HD features.

As an anology, how many guys that own the Z1 or the FX1 really shoot in SD?

Here in europe, most of the Z1s and FX1s are used in SD. Wich makes no sense because a DVX kicks their butts in SD.
But for transissions sake SD options are necessary on cams like this.

BTW, Jim: congrats with your DVX. I make a decent living with one for allmost a year now and it's a fantastic camera.

The DVX is the best thing out there for the price. Sure I'd love to have the HVX and I look forward to renting it for special projects. But the DVX still shoots incrediably beautiful filmic footage that combined with a good eye and the ability to tell a story, will thrill clients for years to come. Plus, the possibilities are endless in post to transform the DVX footage into something unimaginable just a few years ago--Magic Bullet and Natress, to name a few. Congrats on making an excellent choice of cameras!

Interesting that so many want to shoot on HD/HDV when they don't have a real need.

At the moment, I'm planning to get an HVX, but I won't be the first in line. In fact, I'll be waiting until after next NAB and see what my options are before my next camera purchase. Even so, I expect the HVX to be the best in its price range/CCD size (etc.).

I'm in the same boat. I will watch developments closely over the next few months. I'm especially curious to see what shakes out on the HVX storage front (P2 vs. Firestore vs. ???).

In the meantime, DVX footage looks great on my 60-inch Sony HDTV. Whenever I show DVX content to people, their first reaction is always the same: "Hey, that looks like a movie!" It will still look great even after the HVX hits the market.

You're asking "Is the DVX dead?" Interesting little tidbit -- I talked to about five dealers this past weekend, and asked 'em "what's the 'ground truth'?" Meaning, what's the actual truth out there in the field, on the ground. Who's selling what? How many units are you moving of each -- or, more usefully, how is the DVX selling vs. the FX1/Z1 vs. the HD100.

Every dealer gave basically the exact same answer: the DVX is outselling the FX1/Z1 by a ratio of between 5:1 and 8:1. And the FX1/Z1 are outselling the HD100 by a factor of 3:1. And that's from dealers in the US, and in New Zealand, all over.

So -- I certainly think the DVX has got some legs still!

hmm...im definitly interested in HD, but more interested in better compression and the abililty to shoot mulit frame rates up to 60p...which combined with twixtor i can probly get 120fps. thats what i want, of course its going to be tight to have in HD. but i will no doubt be down converting to SD most of the time.

ive been doing allot of fx/shot tests for some video treatments ive been writing, and it would be so rad to be able to shoot some of these test at 48/60p and to have the ability to do some green/blue screen work....

tonight im shooting some underwater tests...and man, i wish i could shoot at 48 with some blue screen...in a few months fer sure!
