Dvx100 camera is not over

Hi everyone my name is Devin. For so long I have been reading a lot of information on this dvxuser forum, and while there are a lot of educated people on here who really know what they are talking about, especially advice wise ,but there are some people who start threads and they want to know about hd vs. sd and some of you tell them that hd is better, which is not always the case. I have been a proud owner of the dvx100 cameras and the hvx200 and the Sony ex1 camera, and they all work good, neither one is better than the other, it all depends on how you use it. film is just painting with light, and if we all understand that than it should not matter what camera we use.

You can take a red camera and create some horrible results if you do not know what to do, so to set the record straight the dvx cameras or any sd camera can give fantastic results once you understand how to light your scenes correctly. If you have hd and understand how to light your scenes correctly then you can really experience the high resolution that hd provides. Most films that I see people do with these hd camera are not even beautiful to look at, there films have no sense of mood, they figure they buy a 6,000 camera and all of there problems are solved .

I have done many test where a dvx out performs an hvx and the same in vice versa,i just feel really stupid even performing test because it should'nt even matter.I encourage people to really learn lighting, it’s more important than the camera you use.Do not think that purchasing a 35mm lens adaptor is going to do everything for you,and it’s true, a 35mm lens adaptor can add a cinematic look to your project but a 35m lens adaptor also looses a lot of light. I remember when people just started purchasing them, everyone started complaining about the light loss issues, I started to laugh because I thought who cares then just add more light. we should be working with light anyway, but there are some people on this forum who show there behind the scenes pictures and those people are the true filmmakers who understand how to create a cinematic project. check out some of there pictures, I’m sure you’ll see a lighting set up somewhere and I’m sure you’ll see a 35mm lens adaptor on their camera threads, ever wonder why there films get you motivated to create your own? that’s because they know how to paint with light, they understand that the adaptor losses light so they add more to create depth and mood .

If anyone out there is still using the dvx camera, trust me the camera is a wonderful camera, just like any other camera out there. don’t give in to all this hype about hd and how its so much better, yes in deed there could be more resolution from these cameras, but only in the hands of a true professional who knows how to get hd to look good, don’t expect the best quality right out of the box. Great cinematography is so much more then a camera.

I know a lot of people ARE CHECKING MY BACKGROUND ON MY PROFILE SAYING THIS GUY NEVER STARTED A POST BEFORE, WHO DOES HE THINK HE IS, ALL OF THAT DOES NOT MATTER. THE INFORMATION I’M SAYING IS TRUE, NO MATTER WHAT, HOW IS WHAT I’M SAYING NOT THE TRUTH? I JUST BELIEVE THAT THIS FORUM IS SUCH A WONDERFUL THING. I THINK A LOT OF US NEED TO STOP WORRYING ABOUT WHAT CAMERA TO USE AND START WORKING WITH WHAT WE HAVE TO CREATE A MASTERPIECE. ANYONE WITH AN OPINOIN ABOUT WHAT I JUST SAID PLEASE REPLY THANKS IN ADAVANCE

I had to edit his post and make paragraphs out of it.

Thank you very much Mr. Devon. We'll, uh, we'll take it under

Words of wisdom from the guy with about $17,000 worth of digital video cameras.

What service is this tired old perspective serving? Of course it's not about the camera... we all know that deep down. But you need something to waste your time on and hyper-analyzing the latest video equipment is probably better than stealing cars, no? Imparting your 'wisdom' to us all is also a time-wasting diversion from making your masterpiece. So go make it.

Lay off the crack, it will kill you.

Seriously tho, theres no need to create a thread like this since it will get buried in a few days.

...and you're not wasting time responding to it? Unless you're the thread police, why not let the man give his opinion about the DVX on a forum designed for that purpose?

You can debate the issues, if you like, but why take issue with using the forum itself?

It's so funny how people are fustrated about this thread, if thats the case then why bother replying.

At least i know it was read that was the purpose and this entire forum was created for the dvx camera so whats the problem?

I UNDERSTAND THAT DIFFRENT CAMERA ARE COMEING OUT EVERYDAY AND THATS COOL BUT ALOT OF PEOPLE FEEL THAT THE DVX IS DONE WITH.

READ THE FORUMS YOURSELF AND IF YOU DID IT WOULD BE VERY CLEAR WHY I STARTED THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE ,ALOT OF US STILL USE THE DVX CAMERA AND WE LOVE OUR DVX FORUM

IT'S JUST SUCKS, WHEN PEOPLE MAKE IT SEEM LIKE HD IS THE BETTER MEDIUM FOR REASONS THAT NO ONE CAN EXPLAIN.

Advice to Devin: Don't use caps lock, it makes you sound like a moron.

Response to Devin: You make a good point, the dvx is far from dead. However, HD is better. Simple as that. Besides higher resolution, many (not all) of the new cameras are better and stronger tools to "paint with light" as you so eloquently put it. Just because the HVX is better, doesn't mean the DVX is bad, it's just no longer state of the art. The DVX has already withstood the test of time. While most cameras of it's generation have come and gone, people are still buying the DVX100B brand new because it is so great.

You really can't argue with that statement. But please do if you can.

Believe me, I 'waste' as much time as anyone on here. I'm definitely not the thread police, it's just the OP was one of the more ludicrous posts I've seen. Nothing against him, I'm sure he's a fine citizen and probably a talented and creative guy. But it would be nice if he had the same aspirations for his posts as he does for our filmmaking. That was utter DVXuser diarrhea. And he definitely didn't coin the term 'painting with light' either.

I'm not usually this crabby. Forgive me.

Hey, Markyf, I do get where you're coming from, and I wasn't trying to slam you too much. I get that way with the Squeeze vs. Letterbox debate, so I'm no angel.

This is the funny part for me. The OP was venting. Then you vented about his venting. Then I vented about your venting.

Perhaps we can all agree that the DVX100 is still a fine camera in the right hands, that we have ever-increasing options in new technology, and the proof is on the screen.

Now, my opinion: I would like a Red One, but I don't need a Red One. In the end, its a very expensive step and I don't have the cash for it. When I do, there may be other options for me. I've seen great HD and awful HD. Same for SD. I use the DVX and the HVX, but a new camera won't make me a better shooter. Better shooting will. Still working on those skills so far....

Cheers to all of you:beer:

I'd be curious to see an example where SD is a better choice than HD.
And I'm not saying show me an SD video that is better than an HD video - but in what situation would SD be a better choice?
All things being equal HD will always be the better option.

Totally agree with the second half of your statement - "it all depends on how you use it." However, if you light properly there is not a situation I can think of where a DVX is going to get an image that will be superior to an HVX or and EX1.

Not a slam on the DVX. As has already been mentioned the DVX has proven itself over the years. It is really the best small form factor DV camera I've ever worked with.
But take the same DP and give him all three of those cameras - and the DVX will not outperform the other two.
film is just painting with light, and if we all understand that than it should not matter what camera we use.
Of course it's all about the lighting - but once you have it lit....well... then it's all about what tool you're using to capture that light.
And some tools are simply going to capture a better image that others.
Is a camera going to make anyone a better cinematographer? Of course not.
But some cameras will definitely capture the cinematographer's work better than others.
I encourage people to really learn lighting, it’s more important than the camera you use.
Well of course it's more important.
But simply because one aspect is more important doesn't make the other factors unimportant.

Everything is a balance.
I'm all for acknowledging the paramount importance of lighting - but let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Then again....neither the camera nor the lighting will matter in the least if the script is bad or poorly directed.

:)

Louis, I agree with everything your writing. My world is getting a little more equal all the time, but often it hasn't. What I do like about using the DVX is that I have to push the envelope a bit. It really did force me to learn and do more to get what I wanted. The HVX will get me technically better images (IMO), but I still like the challenges of the DVX.

I don't know that "November" and "Iraq In Fragments" would have been that much better with HD. I could be wrong. I think the look was right for both.
