DVX v. Film

Over the last year and a half, i have been intently following and researching the DVX in hopes of convincing myself to abandon film altogether.

it has finally happened :D

With the help of Scott Beck and his DVX shot movie "University Heights", Nick and Jarred's "Art History" and Barry's Book and DVD, i can honestly and comfortably say that i am going to let go of film and commit and embrace the 24p technology using the DVX. it is the way of the future.

Barry's split-screen film comparison (along with the rest of that wonderful DVD) was the clincher!

Thanks guys for your pioneering work!

Got to love the DVX! :D

Have you taken a look at the various 35mm adapters that have been floating around? Might be of interest to you if you have a film background. So much more control of DOF!

Welcome to the club!

Re: DVX v. Film

I was never really happy with the look of video... until I saw this site. It changed my whole outlook. :)

Re: DVX v. Film

I use to hang on really tight to the idea of movies should only be shot on film. But that changed when I saw what the DVX could do and when I became a film maker. The first time I saw what the DVX could do was at Able Cine Tech a couple days before I bought it. Damn I love this camera. :)

Re: DVX v. Film

I get hung up here in Technical and Hardware a lot. I know I ought to be all over this forum learning volumes about cinematography, lighting, audio and the rest - just not enough time ! !
What I wish to see here is one thread where people like vegasdigitalfilms document, in some detail, the learning experience of moving from film to filmlike video. I think to have this perspective would help a lot of us to better understand what it takes to get what we're looking for from the DVX.
I do know that much of this has already been covered throughout this wonderful forum, but to have just one little spot dedicated to the subject would, at least for me, be nearly priceless.

Re: DVX v. Film

My first 16mm color short came out under exposed, all phucken 9 rolls of them. Human error. We got nothing but black. Our second 16mm film, the film we bought ended being really old. Basically all our rolls of film had grain and other **** on it. Both of my first 2 films never got finished. Plus we waisted all together about 5 thousand dollars. I was extremely sad. I almost gave up till I heard about digital. Next you know 24p arrived. Never looked back. I still have my old arri and bolex cameras. It lays next to my He-Man action figures. ;D

This is just the begining. It only gets better.....

Re: DVX v. Film

i don't have extensive film experience. Most of the last 20 years has been video. But i have done several projects on film because the client wanted the "professional" look.

To me, the DVX and the 24p technology is a format all of its own. Though it does come very, very close to film, it never will be, but as i said, it is unique and i think will eventually become the standard.

Right now i see things this way:

video
Film
24p

Three separate formats. All with their own unique characteristics.

The best thing to do is to embrace 24p for what it is.

I had a friend who loaded an Arri 16BL magazine "off the top" instead of "off the bottom"...and shot eight 400'ers through the base, which is kind of like shooting though a 12-stop 84C Orange filter...

Come to think of it, if anybody ever needs to simulate shooting through a 12-stop 84C filter, now they know how...

Re: DVX v. Film

I once was producing a film project and a green camera assistant mixed up the exposed from the unexposed and put an exposed roll through the camera twice.

Had to do a complete re-shoot...assistants ass was grass. I loaded the mags on the next shoot.

Shaw - could you tell me where I can find more info on the 35mm adapter floating around? I'd be most appreciative!
