DVX simulating 8/16mm

Hey, all. I am new to this forum but want to sincerely thank everyone for convincing me to buy the DVX in lou of the XL2. In fact I was heading to H&B to buy it when I came across this site. God, what a camera! Anyway, for my first post, I was wondering if anyone has ever tried using this camera to simulate 8 or 16mm footage. For a project I am working on now I would like to use some black and white 16mm with color super 8 but it takes an enormous amount of time and money to do so and I would like to look at any alternatives first. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

Re: DVX simulating 8/16mm

welcome jerred... I think you asked the right question cos that's what the DVX does best as far as I can tell. I'm still getting to know mine but I often look at my 24p footage and marvel at how it does look like 16mm film if settings are right and lighting is good throw in a little color correction and voilla...16mil ala mini dv.

Re: DVX simulating 8/16mm

for starters, get Barry's DVD, it has alot of good info on how to use the camera. Second try a neat little plugin called magic bullet.

And welcome jtnorth to da playas club!

you mean B&H?

and following what Bluespider mentioned, didn't you get your copy of magic bullet when you bought your camera?

Re: DVX simulating 8/16mm

you know Spider, looking at William Hung repeating that move, it just looks like kung-fu now.

Yeah, that's really disturbing.

Re: DVX simulating 8/16mm

I really like how he does a bunch of quick moves, then slow it down with a finishing chop.... very dramatic ;D

Re: DVX simulating 8/16mm

Yeah, sorry about that B&H, it was really late. No I have not yet picked up Magic Bullet but only from lack of money. It is definitely the next thing on my list. I did some thinking though, and if I was to shoot my footage on the DVX and in post put it in B&W, up the contrast, and add some grain, it should look pretty good. For super 8 I remembered the Blair Witch Project which was shot with B&W 16mm and Hi8, yet after it was blown up the Hi8, in my opinion, looked quite abit like super 8. So taking my old Hi8 camera, a magic bullet pass for 24p, a bit of color correction, and some more grain should create pretty good results. Just one thing I haven't figured out is that super 8 has a bit of shake to the footage, from what I have seen. Does anyone know how to recreate this? Thanks again for your replies.

Re: DVX simulating 8/16mm

What are you using to edit in? Vegas can do just about all of those effects, so you'd just shoot DVX/24P and then use the Vegas film effects to add the grain, contrast, scratches, flicker, hair in the gate, dust specks, and jitter...

Re: DVX simulating 8/16mm

I am using Premiere Pro and After Effects, though I may look into Vegas as alot of people are using it, it seems. I am pretty sure After Effects can do all those things as well. I'll check.

Re: DVX simulating 8/16mm

Hey... I'm using Prem 6.5, Tried the vegas trial but can't get my head around the workflow I get disoriented. Seen some good stuff come out of it though. it,s a drag for me cos I'd like to edit in 24p. Maybe I'll just take the phone off the hook, go on welfare for a month and soak myself in Vegas ;)

Re: DVX simulating 8/16mm

Soaking yourself in Vegas for a month is one way to go, but if you subscribe to the notion that time is money, I *highly* recommend you get the Vegas training DVD's from either Gary Kleiner or Douglas Spotted Eagle. Those guys will teach you in three hours what it'd take me three weeks to stumble through on my own.

And once you know how to run Vegas, you will *never* want to see Premiere 6.5 again, trust me! :)

Re: DVX simulating 8/16mm

Beats goin on welfare :) thanks Barry i'll check them out. seem to me though if time is money I should be one rich mutha

Re: DVX simulating 8/16mm

I don't know. The interface just doesn't work for me :-/

I really like the premiere interface so I'm quite happy sticking with it :)

Re: DVX simulating 8/16mm

That's exactly my point... but that means I can't edit a 24p time line cos adobe are slack asses I guess. If I want to edit this way I've got to bite the bullit and figure Vegas out. I'm also intrigued when I'm told that to learn Vegas is to never want to look at premiere again. Prem pro can now edit 24p I think (I could be wrong here) but here I go again... I refuse to run win xp damn it!!!

Re: DVX simulating 8/16mm

lol well if you refuse to run XP then that does indeed shut Adobe out ;)

Might I ask why? It's much better than most of the previous versions of windows (yes I know I hate windows too...).

Re: DVX simulating 8/16mm

If it comes with the box as all my other os's did, then fine I'll run it but i'm not shelling out money to billy boy and his droogs when he blocks all other os attempts, The man is a.... well I don't want to get into my regard for old billy boy...Not on such a fine forum as this. I just loved that old joke "If Microsoft built cars you would never have to buy one, You'd just borrow a freinds and copy it" sorry my whole rant here reminded me ;D

Premiere Pro 1.5 not only can edit 24p but its compatible with the DVX100. There's nothing wrong with XP, it does the job. I do anything to be with Jesscia Alba. oh shoot! did I say that outloud.
