DVX Plus Slave

As far as I know, any miniDV camcorder with firewire will do the job. Just set the slave to VCR mode and go for it!

yes any standard definition dv camera. you cant use a minidv hdv camera though, because of different codecs but i use a cheap $100 sony and it works fantastic!

And why couldn't you just use the cheap cam corder and totally ditch the DVX?

That's what I was thinking. I want to shoot with the dvx and than if I have to rewind the tape instead of using the DVX heads, find something else to download the video from.

I may be way off base having not received my DVX yet.

Are we talking playing the video back in the DVX and recording the video to another camcorder, than downloading to a computer?

It's like this: Shoot your footage with the DVX. Take the tape out of the DVX and put it into the cheap camcorder. Rewind the tape, then playback or capture into the NLE on your computer using the cheap camera. This saves wear on your DVX's heads and if you fry a firewire port, it isn't the DVX that gets damaged!

Thats what I would worry about. Not worried about losing a cheap Cam, Just need to keep the DVX and computer running.
Great idea.
I like this idea because when I'm out shooting sports, my wife can than download and edit sports while I continue to shoot other games.
Keep cranking out the video and DVD's , will help save me alot of time.

I am really excited to try this when I get to the office! It justs amazes me what my DVX can do up to this time (upon reading the great forum). I am a very proud owner!!! :)

Wooooo woo wo wait...so if you use a slave camera, you still have to carry your DVX around with you right? And to change shutter speed etc you gonna have to have your DVX on all the time? So whats the best way to use the slave camera....attatch it to the DVX?

Can you use the slave camera and the DVX at the same time to get different angles on a subject?

the slave works just like a vcr. all the imaging comes through the dvx lens and settings Your just no longer using the heads on the dvx.
