Horay! i finally bought a used dvx 100b pal and just started playin around with it, been thinkin about shooting a short film / music vid and learn how to use the cam more as i go, i'd like to experiment with 24p but i just have FCE and imovie so that means i can only work on 50! correct?

Since you are using the PAL version, you do not have the 24p option. But you do have 25p, which is close enough. Some one correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe that the PAL DVX will lay 25p to tape at the same frame rate as standard 50i (just as the NTSC version lays 30p to tape at 29.97), so you should be able to edit with FCE.

c2v thanks for your reply, yes its 25p, could anyone else shed some light on this thanks.

cheers..so if i shoot 25p - import to FCE I'll have 25 frames progressive, i don't need to do pulldown? thanks a lot i'm new to FCE

PAL runs at 25fps. The DVX will lay your 25p material to tape at the PAL rate, no pull-down necessary.

Pull-down (as far as the DVX is concerned) is used to convert 24p to 29.97 in the NTSC world, since the original 24 frames need to be laid to tape at 29.97 frames. So there's a cadence that splits parts of certain frames apart and uses those pieces to assemble new "filler" frames. Pull-down removal detects those "filler" frames and pulls them apart(or removes them) to leave behind the original 24p. Again, this is all in the NTSC world.

With PAL, 50i means 50 interlaced fields... divide that by two fields per frame and you get 25 frames. Because PAL runs at 25fps, it captures motion that looks very close to film's 24 frames. There were a few US film makers in the earlier days of DV (before 24p shooting was introduced) who would shoot with PAL versions of miniDV cameras (like the XL1) and then convert to NTSC just to get the 25fps, or more-like-film, motion.

Technically, anything you do to footage to put it into another, faster frame rate stream IS pulldown -- so 25p is in a 50i stream with 2:2 pulldown, just as 30p is in a 60i stream with 2:2 pulldown. This is because each frame has to be split into two fields to match the 50- or 60-fields-per-second rate.

HOWEVER, because of the way NLEs work -- which is to consider two fields a "frame" and treat them that way on the timeline -- when you edit 25p on a 50i timeline, your edits end up in the same places they would if you had edited on a 25p timeline. You won't notice a difference.
