Dvx Music video by female

Thanks for the post. The video was great. I am always impressed with the flexibility of the DVX and the results it delivers. I was particularly impressed by this video, and the fact that it had a female director was inspiring. In my opinion there are not enough female director's being given a fair kick at the can and this video is proof that there is a serious and untapped talent pool out there. GREAT POST!!!

HE HE....

Now that I've actually seen the video....

I really liked the idea, and there was some really nive shots but the whole thing was far too slow for me. I'm impatient at times but I felt that the cuts were too slow for the images and story.

that was extremely well done. what did you use for the CG ?

I don't think the "you" of the video is on this thread, it's just a post of
someone else's work, however, you could contact the artist and post the
answer here when you get it.

I'd have to agree with monte for the most part. Although I really did like the morphing of faces and the whole moon trick. My test is if I watch the whole thing through I usually have high praise. I think I watched a total of 20 seconds with a couple more scrubbing to the end. Different strokes...

c'mon Kev, watch it again, watch it all the way through, and don't let yourself be influenced by Monte, but let yourself be influenced by me! ;-)

did you see "Me and You and Everyone We know"? please tell me you liked it!! I have hope for you, watch it again Kev! :-)

Shawn,

OK your right, I didn't give it a fair shake by only watching 20 seconds, so I watched the whole thing and this is what I think...

Where is the creative Cinematography? Most of the shots were locked down or plain ordinary dolly shots. There were a couple really creative shots that I liked. The shots where the camera comes in over his head coming down his body to reveal the ants/termites below, and the dolly shot where the camera was in tight and the boys face was framed out really nicely.

The opening scene with the transvestite or whatever he is looks out of place. It’s a very average middle class looking house with a van in the driveway and a front porch that is cluttered with the average Joe six pack miscellaneous crap that detracts from the visual appeal of the shot. To me it looks like they just didn’t care where they shot this scene, as long as they got it for free. To me it is very important to make things visually unordinary, because that is what makes it interesting to watch. They should have moved the van and cleaned up the front porch for better lines. I personally would not have used that house or porch at all. If however he was in a run down trailer park he would look a lot better IMO.

As far as the pacing on the song on the action she depicted in the video they match up quite nicely and the mood of the song is right on with the images. I find that slow songs like this really have to be enjoyable to listen to in order to appreciate the music video. I found it very un-enjoyable listening to this song. I thought it was off pitch and in general quite horrible. In order to give an honest opinion I watched this not once all the way through, but 3x…Cringe. If I was to separate the video from the song I would enjoy the visuals more.

The music video has no real color palette to tie it all together. It’s very abstract which makes it hard to watch. It hurts my brain. In contrast I really enjoyed your piece Seattle Nights (http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=41566) because even though it was really slow the visuals were excellent and the music created the perfect mood for the cinematography.

An example of a slow song with the most basic visuals that really work is Cold Play's "Yellow".

The song is super slow and the video in my opinion is excellent in its simplicity.

“and don't let yourself be influenced by Monte, but let yourself be influenced by me! ;-)”

LOL, I am influenced by my own intuition. I am not the type to jump off a bridge just because the person in front of me did. I develop my own perspective on things, and my opinion is just that…and opinion. I am glad that people like this music video. Differing taste is what makes everyone unique. I don’t try to actively influence anyone, but I get inspired by other peoples work, and if I inspire people that see my work...great.

“did you see "Me and You and Everyone We know"? please tell me you liked it!! I have hope for you “

Yeah, I really liked it!

In conclusion I really hate one liner replies, and I don't think it was fair for monte or anyone to say you don't like someone's work and then not tell us why. This forum is great in the fact that it allows us to all give each other input and make our work better, and constructive criticism turns into just criticism without an explanation.

Peace…

Yes, I agree - one liners suck, with that said:

I didn't enjoy this video.

The colors were arbitrary and bland, and lent nothing to the feeling of the piece, other than being, well, arbitrary and bland - which I suppose matched the cinematography (all locked down shots, or moving dollies, as you mentioned Kev)

Also, part of it was probably because I didn't grasp the concept fully - So a boy goes into a magical world, perhaps his imagination, spurred by the sight of ants. So now the ants are big - and for some reason there's a 4 way color gradient, upon the pushing of a button on a tree.

It was just too artsy for me, I'm afraid - and far too slow and plodding - but I like fast things where something is always happening on screen that is visually and aesthetically pleasing - that's just what I like.

I'm sorry, usually I wouldn't be so "mean" - I've seen far worse videos and have written nice comments about them - but seeing as the artist isn't on these forums actively herself I feel that it's appropriate that I am a bit more forward on the subject matter.

As I write this I'm trying to think of things that I liked in the video - so I don't sound so negative and cynical... I guess I liked the costumes (Ant people and the Bear kid, and older version of him) I also liked the way the background shook on the closeup of the childs face as he was morphing...

I guess it's a good video if you're into that sort of stuff :) And again I must stress that I'm looking at this video in a subjective manner - meaning what I personally like stylistically - which obviously seems to clash with most people in this thread - it was by no means a "bad" video, but I didn't like it... "stylistically"

best wishes
monte

I liked the video - I thought the color scheme fit the mood of the song. I don't mind the abstract concept, and I thought the creepiest thing in it was the guy in the beginning with the can of beans or what have you.

The first time I tried to watch it I made about 25 seconds. Read a couple of posts and thought, maybe I didn't give it a chance. Went back, turned the music WAY down and the video was okay. I'm not sure what it was all about, it felt kind of random, like I was stuck in a bad dream. The music killed it for me. I actually got a headache listening.
