DVX for Live Use

Hey All,

I'm planning on trying to use the DVX in a live situation. Here's what I'm looking to do, tell me what you think. I have a very little budget, so please do suggest renting equipment.

I want to go firewire out from my DVX to a laptop. I was hoping all of you (or at least some of you) knew of a software based character generator that I could buy or download that would accept the video feed coming in through the Firewire. (I prefer not to have to install a SDI card and then get the conversion things to get my DVX feed into the SDI. Then, I need to find some way to go about 500 feet to a large screen HDTV. I think composite video is my best option then let the TV uprezz it.

Thanks,
Joe

Simplest is to avoid the laptop all together in the video signal path from the camera. The Firewire will give you delay.

I'd look at an external (composite) character generator, or a keyer that you can feed from the computer.

What's your application?

I plan to broadcast a live video feed over a series of tvs on a cc network.

I really wouldn't mind the delay if it meant that i could only buy software to use on a laptop rather than having to carry around special hardware. I don't want to spend money for hardware i may only use 3 or 4 times.

I'm creating the score board thingy on the top of the screen for a basketball game...

That looks like just what I was looking for. It's got everything I need (except for a laptop powerful enough to use it). Just one question that I'm still not sure about this software: can it export 720x480 to the monitor, or is it just for web streaming?

Wirecast I believe is just for streaming. I seem to recall that you can fullscreen it's output window and then send that feed out somewhere.

What you are trying to emulate normally requires all sorts of dedicated equipment; so whatever you do on the cheap, it will be a compromise somewhere.

I don't need HD quality animated graphics, just a simple text overlay, maybe a static background like a transparent black, but thats about it, nothing to complicated.

It seems to me that a basketball game is going to take some crazy software to deal with the (presumably) constant updating of the score.

What about using a second camera, locked down on the scoreboard, and then using a video mixer along the lines of the Panasonic WJ-MX50 to do a "picture in picture" effect of the scoreboard in one of the corners of the screen? (Full disclosure: I've never tried this for a basketball game, but I've used it for a sign-language interpreter, and it worked pretty well.) The second camera wouldn't have to be on the level of the DVX, with it being a small PiP window it could be just about anything.

Actually, i downloaded the trial of Wirecast, and its exactly what I need. It has some awesome presets that I can manipulate into score tickers or titles for the onscreen graphics. Plus, I might be able to actually use the webcast feature, so its perfect. It can record to disk in almost any format, I use Apple ProRes 422, and I could also output a full screen live vid to another monitor. Its very simple and straight foward. Didnt have any problems with speed whatsoever on my octo-core mac.

For the score, I already figured it out.. Its very easy since I'll have someone doing just that job, onscreen graphics.

Thanks guys!

They will be busy. :) But it's very good to have a dedicated person in that position.

Also, I have done the "score-board camera in a PIP" trick many times, and it works really well.
