Re: DVX fools them again for 35mm.

Think Films is the same company that Shane Carruth (Primer) signed with, right?

Re: DVX fools them again for 35mm.

the extra money in post was mostly to meet deliverable requirements internationally.. Things like pan and scan and all that glorius stuff.  But, to retain the best image we could the  Edit was also done uncompressed on an Avid Symphony, and it went through a very expensive hardware Tera "cleaner" to remove noise.

There was some underwater stuff, but it was shot with a VX1000 at 60i, and we threw most of it out just because it looked so much worse and all the 24p converters out there couldn't make it match the the DVX.

We also shot with 1/8 promists from the get go to knock down on resolution dependence. This movie was conceived as a 80's horror.. the aim wasn't to get the cleanest hi rez sharpest images we could, but we were very happy with the results. David Bercovichi, the head D.P. did quite a remarkable job.

The lack of the anamorphic adapter was a personal choice.. we broke one (since it is plastic) on a previous production so from that day forward I deemed it unsuitable for real feature production (i.e. being handled and tossed around by a full 30 person crew, 1st and  2nd camera assistants and camera trainees, company moves, camera carts etc.) This feature was filmed on a somewhat remote island where we where sequestered for 4 weeks so going to get another one if it broke would eliminate an entire day of production. then you add the focus issues.. and the mattebox (at that time) issues, plus the light loss... you get the idea.

Of course though.. for 1 or 2 person crews where only one person handles the adapter and camera etc., I am sure the adapter would hold up just fine.

Yes Think signed  Primer, Spellbound, tons of award winning productions.

Trailer is out, but not posted on the web. I will let you know when its out.

"Hey Jarred - if you didn't use the anamorphic, how did you pull off high quality 16:9 - I assume you did to 16:9..?? "
so is it 16:9 squeezed?

Re: DVX fools them again for 35mm.

it was letterboxed in camera... the good old-fashioned way.. it was shot with 2 old DVX's, no squeeze option. It however would of obviously been better to shoot 4:3 and frame for 16:9 like I normally would do, but this time it wasn't my call.

Re: DVX fools them again for 35mm.

Maybe some time next year on the military thing.. its still being shot.

I cant remember how much it cost, I wanna say $10,000 but that's from a faded memory. It was done at the very end of post.

Re: DVX fools them again for 35mm.

Check out the website http://www.sleepoverthemovie.com
There are more pics and info about the movie. The Trailer DOES NOT seem to work for some reason. Hot chicks in the movie!! Seriously!! When can I buy this mofo!! Looks great Jarred!! ~reservoir~

Re: DVX fools them again for 35mm.

That isn't the official site.. one of the crew set that up for pics, but it is the right movie :) Trailer was pulled from that site because the trailer that was on there was just a rough producer's assembly, not the real trailer.

And yes.. girls where fine :)

Re: DVX fools them again for 35mm.

Thanx for clarifying that Jarred. Looks like a really cool film in the Vein of *Sleepaway Camp* and other such cult Horror flicks. Rock on Horror!! ~reservoir~

yeah that tall drink of water was me.. I saved production a good 5k by being the crane, specially since first, actually he was the second (we went through 3 DPs) dp was a cool little argentinian just over 5 feet :)

Hey, Jarred - Congrats!!!! It's great to hear GOOD things happening! I did want to ask if you could share what settings you used in-camera? Can't wait to see the trailer!

I wish I knew how to go about starting up something.

I have my editing station ready, and my camera, a few lights, and an ok tripod. I dont have a shotgun mic which sucks, but thats the major thing holding me back right now.

Even still plenty of people do short films without great mics, so I think I could work on stuff but i have no idea how to find willing actors in my hometown of jackonville florida...

I've thought about using coworkers but I think that would be a really really bad idea.

lucidz.. you would be amazed the talent you can find for free.. Free talent is easier to find than crew, the easiest thing is to put an add in your local paper, or put flyers at the cafes or acting schools/playhouses in your town. Have an audition, be very clear on what you will give them (i.e. nothing) but offer them footage for thier reel etc.

lucidz - email me or call me. I'll let you use my mic and I can hook you up with some actors or you could sit in on an audition we have coming up. joshtownsend@gmail.com 904-982-4938. It's not nearly as hard as you think. You'd be amazed the help you can get if you just come across being confident. Worked for me anyway.

Jarred - Cool stuff buddy. I had a similar job on a lowbudget slasher flick last year. It's so much fun getting bloody isn't it?
