DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

Hey Elvis, I liked the lighting a lot, made up, toghether with the high pedestal, a very colorful/washed out look that resembles me some stuff from the eighties... It's no a look I personally endorse, but it was very well done. I also don't like the higher contrast stuff although I'm not sure you had anything to do with that (post) and I also don't like the strobes. I think the way the washed imagery looks, it contributes to a flou feel that is much agressed by the cluncky strobes and blown contrast images. I liked the stabilizer work, but it's a little bit shaky. It works for me, but I think it should be dealt as suberb handheld instead of stabilizer, because the shaking was clearly perceptible.

Overall, it was very competent photography. But truth be told, I don't like the video also... Hudsons comments pretty much nailed it, and the discussion they started seems to clarify a lot of other mysteries. The only difference is that I don't really like the song as well... But this last part is just a personal opinion.

Ah, just to add this last tought: You know what would have looked cool? Smoke!

Cheers!

1. "if you cut this on Vegas"

You think I could create this in a home movie crap toy like Vegas? I cut it in AVID. honestly![/quote]

You know what.. you shoulda said you used Windows Movie Maker, because that's what it looks like.

And dude, you need to stop being so defensive and being a Jackass. Nobody cares how famous you are or that you have your own publisist so Egos dont go far on this site.

Elvis is looking for feedback here, and after eveyone says something you jump on them and insult thier work and blah blah blah.. Take that **** somewhere else.

Elvis is a very respected member here, does fantastic work and although I have only met him once at a trade show, I consider him a friend, and to be honest your attitude here is really making him look bad.

Elvis/Scott.. sorry for coming down like this on your buddy here, its not directed to you at all. Your camera work in this video was very good.

FYI... Johns DC video, as simple as it is, IMHO kicks yours to the curb...

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

In your far-too-angry response, blacky, you laughed that someone thought you were using Vegas instead of Avid. So since you're using a $100k-250k super-duper editing system, why use a $3k camera? Personally, I've got post houses that I could use Avid systems on whenever I'd like to, but I'd really actually prefer to use Vegas or Final Cut. I use the DVX because it can deliver cheap, quality results instead of having to pay for stock or even HD tape.

If you're working in production, you have clients, right? How do you possibly sit in an edit (of any medium) and take critiques? Based on your off-the-handle responses here, I can't imagine anyone coming back to utilize your services if you're snapping at every comment.

And yes, I agree with what everyone has posted here about the music video. The DP clearly knew what they were doing, but the thing seems to have fallen apart with the director and the editor, because it just doesn't fit together very cleanly. Sure, maybe if you're just using the video as an internal marketing tool, but I really can't imagine this getting any airtime cut as it is now. Maybe you should try Vegas and do a quick re-cut?

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

I think I heard enough from this Jackass.. Dont know why he is wasting his time yapping to us "hobby doers" lol.

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

My motto, F*#k art, lets make money.

That's interesting because I thought it was very artstudentesque.

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

Okay, I rarely comment on people's work on the web, but Elvis has been here a long time and racked up 1,000 posts, and he's asking, so here it is:

Speaking from a strictly cinematographic perspective, Elvis, I think you did a very good job. Some of that stuff looks terrific! A lot of it is a little too low-contrast for what I would have thought would be appropriate, but some of it (especially certain of the outdoors shots) is just dynamite. Well done.

The MagiqCam work doesn't seem all that smooth. Looks like you may need more practice with that -- assuming that the bumps & stops in there were due to the shooting, and not some sort of effect added in the editing.

I agree with the smoke comment -- it'd have been nice to see some shafts of light in the house, or something like that to give the scene some texture and depth. Most of the indoors stuff looked kind of flat, like there were a few softlights spread around and that's it.

It'd be easier to judge if we could see the raw footage. As it is constructed, this is not a good video. The cinematography was the strong point, and the song was okay (assuming it was an artist vanity project) but the concept, direction, effects, editing -- that didn't help at all.

Bill Black, there are many people on this board with far more experience than you, so to come here sniping at everyone is completely unprofessional. You talk about "professionalism" -- try displaying some. We're a fairly easygoing, relaxed group here, and it usually takes some doing to get us riled up. You did that with just a couple of posts. Your video is not very good. It's not terrible, but it's not all that good. Learn from it, improve, and move on, instead of attacking the tools people use, their geographic location, or anything else.

If you can do that, you'll be better for it, and we'd welcome you to the group. If you can't do that, then please discontinue posting here (since you consider this an "amateur site") and we'll all be happier.

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

Jarred what happened? I thought we were a group that lets people talk to each other without censorship. If you want to lock the thread thats fine but to let people keep posting without giving Mr. Black a chance to reply is not fair. i.m.h.o.

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

Elvis.. the thread isnt locked. I have however stopped Blacky's little bitching rampage. You are right, we are cool here as a community, but I dont let guys with big egos come here and personally attack everyone. If you read the personal emails from him I recieved you would understand.

It's everyones party here, but the party is in my backyard so If I dont like you I will let you know.

But anyways, lets get back on track and give some more input on the video.

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

Elvis! WONDERFUL framing on some of those shots. The shot of the soft focus of her looking through the hole in the wall was super. The Magiqcam is not very magic though , and I think you are right, with a monitor and battery down there it should help. I have found it is best when you put at least 12lbs on it.

Blacky, I find it ironic that you come here and call everyone amateurs when that video editing and direction was the most amateurish video I have seen in along time. I think the only thing that saved your ass is that you hired Elvis, as if the camera work was crap you would really be in trouble.

Listen to your singer. She says in the BTS that she is telling a story (the rose for example) and I can see where it fell apart, the Director had no idea what the Artist wanted with this video.

I think everyone learned something here, Talented Sound guys can be horrible filmmakers with anti-social attitudes and Elvis isn't dead.

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

I am super amatuer; total hack; dreamer; wannabe.....

But at least I'm not an asshole, right?

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

too bad this thread had to get all mucked up, but wutrugonna do?

i just saw the video. Elvis, i would say that the cinematography was good, although there were a few shots that i didnt care for at all. Mostly the stuff where she is sitting on the floor with the blue light being cast in her hair. To me it made it look very 80's video/pornoish. were you involved in the color correction? to me the CC hurt the video, too many different styles that didnt look very good for the most part. there were 2 color schemes that did look very good though, the BW stuff was great! and there was a shot towards the end with the girls looking up in a medium 2 shot, that had some really good color correction. I liked 90% of the compositions, but again, the weak color correct took away from the goodstuff. i kinda liked the song, kinda wierd, the girl was strange/interesting to look at. anyway, hats off for getting this one out dude, your part was the strong point.

Peace

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

I'll still say it is not fair that "Blacky" can't post!!! :-[ Thanks for posting! ::)

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

Blacky brought upon himself; seriously. We are all very lax and at times its like the wild west in here but dont insult the host nor the regulars. Everyone knows that.

I too am sorry this thread got got all jacked. Sigh.............................

No worries; its all family.

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

Trust me, Blacky doesnt have anything nice to say. Guys gone over the deep end.

Anyways, what can you do.

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

Jarred, maybe there can be a kinda hate mail forum?! you know, its where people can go to vent. let off some steam. say the stupidist most ridiculous things they want...hmmmm? it could almost be like the back alley behind dvxuser.com where people go to buy crack, and hookers and whatnot. i bet you alot of people would visit that, and it would probly be pretty entertaining. it could be the anarchy forum or something.... :D

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

I'd tend to vote against something like that... there are bazillions of forums for that type of thing, but again, what everyone seems to like about this place is that it's mostly positive. Building a place for negative commentary will undoubtedly spill over and contaminate this place too...

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

Jarred, I agree with why you blocked Black...kind of. I understand that this is your site and you want to have it be positive a one. But it would be nice just to see how crazy this gets. I mean its only words right. If you don't want to read it then don't. It just seems wrong to take away someone's voice to say what they want. I agree that Black must be a total pain in the ass to work with if he responds it feedback in the manner he has. But still if he wants to act that way then it's his decision to do so. I guess none of what I said really matters because this is your site and you choose to run it however you see fit. It would just be nice to see if this conversation could keep going and maybe Black could get shown that the way he is acting is wrong. Maybe help make him a better person or maybe just someone that you could at least stand being in the same room with. Try and fix the problem not sweep it under the rug to be forgotten.

Re: DVX Elvis' Music Video is on the Net!!!

...hey elvis, i agree with the above stuff . I think you did a great job. the contrast for it was a bit flip floppy though. from washed out to overdone to perfect. but on your part it was good. I own a new version magiqcam as well. ive worn it for hours on end on a few shoots, and love it! it works great once you get it down.  and jared is right, the more weight the better...for the shots anyways :) anything is more stable with more weight.

blacky.. i dont even know what to say  :-/

..and to the girl in the video. you need to take hold of whats going on and make sure that you are getting what you want. i know that the people with all the equipment can be intimidating, and make you feel like you need to shut up and let them do thier jobs cause thats what they do.. but, this is your voice, and your image and story being told.  you seem like youve got alot you want to say and convey to the world. so make sure thats whats getting done.  .. i may be way off here but it seemed like you wanted to express alot more than what was said through this video.  and it all comes down to the connection between you and the director and dp.

anyway. good job everyone..
