Is it possible to connect to a mac via Ilink-firewire and use the DVX100A as a streaming live camera or web cam using Skype or something like that???

Thanks guys

Why would that be a waist, doing a live web blog or something, vs using a cheap webcam with no resolution.....

omg, this really is the end for the DVX. To be cast aside, thrown to the bottom of the heap, only to be used as a glorified Webcam.

Actually, it's not an insult to the DVX at all.

I've used it for web conferencing on iChat between three cities. We had three locations: the bulk of the group in one location along three other people, two in one city and one in another. The DVX was in the primary location.

Using the DVX gave me the ability to shift focus around the room with control that a crummy web could never offer. Plus, the XLR inputs allowed me to mic the whole room so that everyone was heard.

So take a deep breath and let go of gear snobbery. The DVX has amazing latitude in its uses, which makes it a still-relevant piece of equipment.

Dude, using a dvx for a Web cam is overkill. Period! A simple Dv cam will suffice for the requirement.

Using a camera with the features avail. such as the DVX for a simple setup like a Web cam was certainly not what the developers at Panasonic had in mind when they marketed the 24p capabilities to the lo/no budget producers and TV stations alike.

So take a deep breath, and suck it up.

I was not saying that people need to go out and get a DVX specifically for use as a web cam. Yes, that's spending way too much for that purpose. Nor was I saying that the DVX is "only to be used as a glorified webcam." The OP asked a simple question and got a really unhelpful answer.

But by virtue of already owning a DVX, this is one more great place where it works well. And if one is considering purchasing a DVX, while this would not be a reason in and of itself to purchase, it certainly is one more item on the list of things that a DVX can do very well.

Yes, any miniDV camcorder or DVCAM - really, any camera with FireWire - can connect to a Mac and do the same thing. Personally, I actually prefer using my DVX for web conferencing for many reasons, mostly having to do with both sound and image control. So, that's one less piece of cheap gear that I need to go out and purchase for unitasking.

I have been using my DVX for this purpose since I got it 4 years ago. Yes I used it more advanced purposes but it is great as a live streaming camera.

Thanks guy

Your Mac will recognize the DV stream via FireWire. Past that, it depends on the software. For example, conferencing with iChat requires setting iChat's video preferences to external FireWire video (it will see the camera and offer it as an option).

AS always he is very helpful! I used both my DVX and my PDX for a live web stream the other day and WOW i can say i had the best A/V...
