Re: DVX + $13,000 other stuff Stolen :(Steve

Norm. That sucks buddy. My apartment was also broken into a few months ago and the rat bastards took my 2 week old DVX with 2 hrs on the heads!!! No forced entry and the door was locked. I know you must be realy pissed off, but it does get better as time goes on. If there is any bright side, at least you know the point of entry... My robery was a inside job and I'm almost certain the landloards son was involed (even the police are, but can't prove it). So my best advice to you is do your best to get your **** back but don't let the anger eat you up. Again, sorry to here of your misfortune.

Well, back to the main issue of stealing things, I was told by local law enforcement that it is wise for you to engrave your driver's liscense # on all your gear (not just a sticker, but engrave it on the bottom of the gear). That way, if the goods get recovered by the cops, they know who to go to to return it. Make sure you put the state abbr. Just an FYI.

Re: DVX + $13,000 other stuff Stolen :(

Theft like this a problem in Vancouver...

A few years ago when I was working there, we had almost an entire Avid system stolen. The office that bay was in was on the 3rd floor and had absolutely no fire escape near the window. The door had high security (almost prison-like) locks on it, yet the equipment was stolen anyway.

How'd they get in? Well, it wasn't an inside job. At that point, the only person who had a key was the guy who owned the place.

Unfortunately, the window had been left partially open. Some rock-climbing kind of dude scaled the wall, using conduit and gutters on the outside of the building. Got in the office and then opened the door from the inside.

Moral of the story: Don't leave *any* windows open and use deadbolts that need a key on *both* sides of the door!

Re: DVX + $13,000 other stuff Stolen :(

Almost exactly one year ago, between leases and staying with friends, I had everything I owned except my car (and what was in it) stolen from a storgage unit. Tons of electronics, computers, musical intruments, camping equipment, furniture, even my business suits. No insurance. If that wasn't bad enough, my checks were in a desk drawer and they wrote a pile of bad checks. The cops investigating only said "sometimes we get lucky." I was throwing anger fits three times a day for months everytime I thought about something I needed or wanted to use but no longer possessed. It was eating me alive. It was hard but at some point I realized I had to get over it and resume my life.

Do you think crooks watch these forums? It would make sense. If you reveal everything you got all they have to do is track you down. If they are local it's even easier. Just a thought.

Re: DVX + $13,000 other stuff Stolen :(

probably not.. it's easier to look in the local phone book if you were looking for specific equipment to steal.. just look up the places of business...

but you never know..

Re: DVX + $13,000 other stuff Stolen :(

Norm:

There is one consolation in this whole wretched experience you've been through. In the US, all your losses are tax-deductible if you are the victim of a crime(with a copy of police report as proof) I'm not familiar with Canadian tax law, but a phone call or visit to the appropiate websites could confirm this. You just may have a $20,000 tax deduction when you file next year.

I realize this doesn't help you this second, but in a few months when all this anger and frustration is behind you, it would be nice to have a tax break.

For insurance, I really recommend a visit to this link:
http://www.safeware.com.

They insure computers, cameras, etc. and seem to be more extensive than most homeowners' or renter's insurance policies.

Good luck!

Re: DVX + $13,000 other stuff Stolen :(

:o This thread scared me into buying renter's insurance. All my junk is covered now.

[quote author=araujofh link=board=nws;num=1089790655;start=0#2 date=07/14/04 at 02:06:15]I feel sad for you dude.

I have got home insurance, and my DVX has got cover all over the world. So, if anyone stills my camera, I will get my money back.

Dude, an investment like that, you have to rush the insurance straight away.

I did that before I even bougth the camera.

I wouldn't risk it. No way!

Anyway, if you got the serial number, hope you do find it.

All the best

I just bought a bunch of gear and would like to know where you got your insurance. I will be travelling too so whatever insurance you are using might be the one i'm looking for.

thanks

Re: DVX + $13,000 other stuff Stolen :(

I Feel your pain. I had two cameras and other various equipment stolen a little over a month ago. The fool actually put one of my cameras and tripod on ebay. The police won the bid, got his address and entered with a warrant. They recovered one camera, my wireless mics and one tripod. The det. said there was much more stolen goods, but could only get my stuff because that is all that was reported as stolen. I say that to let you know list everything that was taken with the police. It turns out the thieves were drug attics, cranksters as they call them. When the police eneterd they found a large amount of crystal meth. so the bad guy and his girl friend are going away for a quite a while. Secondly monitor the auctions and pawn shops. Third while it may be some one you know, it may very well be random. I wish the best for you. But even if you get your cameras back, mine was severly damaged.

Gopher

Re: DVX + $13,000 other stuff Stolen :(

Norm-

I had skipped over this thread quite a bit, and finally had a chance to sit down and read it. Man, this is heart-breaking, I feel for ya. It is doubly so because I have seen your work, it is worthy.

You know, a theft feels worse than something like a fire, even if the same stuff is gone, because it is essentially insult added to injury. Someone willed to commit an evil act on you.

Fred_Plowman's idea of creeping in the perp's living space and holding a gun to their head while you collect your stuff, while emotionally satisfying, is not the answer. Spoken like a true bail bondsman! Bail collectors enjoy extra protection from the law because they are retrieving people who have broken their good conduct contract with the State. Everyone else has to do things differently.

The suggestion of a tax write-off is great, assuming you've got enough income to make a difference.

I know you are really unhappy about it, but remember that ultimately its all just 'stuff', and the important thing is that you and your girlfriend are unharmed.

Its kind of shocking that this happens in a place like Vancouver. I would say that BC is hands-down full of the friendliest people I've ever met in my life. If I didn't live in Denver, I'd live in Vancouver, without a doubt.

Have you considered getting a howler monkey or dog as a pet? :)

Good luck, Norm, hopefully you'll get a new camera soon and get back to doing what we all love.

Yeah.. bad stuff happens here just like everywhere else. But I hope Norm you have that feature coming up that you can maybe work out something with the producers and maybe get a camera?
