Hello,

I am an ex-pat who has been living in Germany for 2 years now. Next week I am flying to the United States for my first visit since I left. While there I would like to purchase a DVX-100b but am worried about NTSC/PAL conversion. I am planning on making videos here in Berlin where they use PAL. How difficult is it to negotiate the two formats? Is it worth an extra $800 to buy the PAL version? Thank you for your help.

What do you plan on making videos for?

Are you going to be staying over there forever or coming back to the US to live?

If you have a web deliverable then I would go with the regular NTSC camera, but if you need to be able to broadcast or go to DVD then the PAL camera would give you an easier workflow, but you could convert to PAL in your post production suite. That is if you have something like Adobe or Final cut.

If you are living over there for good then I would go with the PAL cam just to save you the extra workflow time. If you are comin back to the US to live in the future then I would go with the NTSC since it is cheaper and will last you once you come back. The PAL cam works over here too, but you have to convert from PAL to NTSC in post just like you will have to convert NTSC to PAL.

A lot of indie film makers used to buy the PAL versions of cameras to get the extra lines of resolution for when they blew up to 35mm. You may want to keep that in mind or that may not even matter to you.

You just have to decide what workflow will be better for you. If saving $800 is worth the extra rendering for every project that isn't going to the web then get the NTSC. If you are moving back over here in a year or two and don't want the extra workflow once you get back then go with the NTSC. If you are staying over there and you need to be able to do DVD's and the sort then I would get the PAL.

Their is no way to convert 24p to 25p/50i successfully. So, if as ef03 said, if you are planning on just doing web-outs, then the NTSC version would be fine. But, for anything other than that, go with the camera that has your ares standard.
