DVRACK HD on Mac

How many of you are working or are trying the new DVRack HD in Mac through Bootcamp??

Any in a MacBook Pro??

:dankk2:

I am going to test it with a MacPro and MBP, but unfortunately there is the 1 Gb RAM limitation on anything Core or Quad Duo

I have a MacBook Pro 17 and have tried both the last version and the new 2.0 with no success. I read elsewhere that it works but I have wasted way too much time trying and have expressed my frustration with it to the folks at Serious Magic, however they seem to have problems with their wand when it comes to a Mac. So if you get it working let me know. I went out and bought a copy of Wind XP Pro pretty much for the purpose of using DVRack and to see if it would actually run (XP that is) and Xp runs, so do many other programs from Adobe etc. But not DVRack.

Brian,

Are you using Bootcamp or Parallels in trying to get DVRack HD to work? I am wondering if one is more successful than the other and whether the new Bootcamp beta 1.1.1 makes any difference.

Thanks,
Kevin

I don't know exactly what's going on with your MacBook, Brian, but there is one known issue that we are aware of.

There is one known issue with Boot Camp that can cause hangups with DV Rack (and potentially any program that accesses video devices.) Currently, Apple says that the iSight hardware is not supported under Windows. However, the Boot Camp disk does install a driver for it, and that driver is highly unstable. The driver can crash applications on startup, and can even bluescreen Windows.

To run DV Rack, we highly recommend removing the driver from Windows. This is done in the Device Manager. Open the System control panel, go to the Hardware tab, and click the Device Manager button. Look for the camera under Scanners and imaging Devices, and choose to remove it.

Parallels does not currently work, since DV Rack needs Direct3D support working, and that currently doesn't run inside Parallels. It is on their roadmap, however, and we are closely following their development.

"1 Gb RAM limitation"?

I understood that the problem was a 2Gb limitation?

There is an 1Gb Ram limitation too in Intel-Macs??

Somebody try DVRack HD in an Intel-Mac without a problem??

The issue is with some systems that have more than one GB of RAM. All cases so far have been on dual core machines, but we can't say definitively that single core systems are immune. The fix for this has passed QA, and the release of a patch with that fix is now waiting on some wrinkles with HDV recording/playback to be ironed out. We're aiming to have it all ready to go by the end of this week.

Thanks for the suggestions all of which I tried as well as dl'ing a new copy of the latest version od DVRack. It won't work. I removed the i-sight driver , checked my bootcampt version and still get the " you don't have .net installed" message each time. I have it installed, I removed it all and re installed it and checked it then had a win xp/nt/unix buddy come over and check my stuff. It is installed correctly. XP is working perfectly with a variety of other software I tested.
Frankly I give up! Let me know if anyone here gets it to work!

I too hopes this works and would like to try the trial software on my macbook before sinking the cash... Anyone tried it on the regular macbook? Any problems with this? I've run FCP without any issues on this.. and also have webcast WMV files like a champ... Love the Macbook!

Since no MacBook users who are successfully running DV Rack 2.0 have chimed in, let me assure you that we had at least a dozen beta testers using MacBooks with Bootcamp without any issues. Off the top of my head, I can't say what the breakdown was between MacBooks and MacBook Pros, but I'm nearly certain there were some of both.

Brian: If the link that Subframe provided doesn't get you running, please let me know. I'll check with our guy in charge of installation to see what could be the matter.

Thanks-- this is what I wanted to hear. I was starting to wonder. I plan to use DV Rack with my HVX200. I already bought the software, but I'm still deciding on the laptop.

I am successfully running DVRack 2.0 HD on my MacBook Pro 2.0ghz 1.5 gig ram using bootcamp with NO PROBLEMS so far. I have frozen up 2 times but both times were only because I was trying to do other things at the same time (I forgot I was forced back into windows world.) Generally I am quite pleased with it and buying the HDV pack and then the upgrade was definately less expensive (less than $500). The MacBook is solid, but if you are used to working on a PC and a PC has been good enough for you, then go with what you know.

That's good to hear. It's interesting you didn't have any problems given that you have more than 1 GB of RAM.

I use both Macs and PCs daily. I'd prefer to get the MBP because my video workflow is all Mac based, so it would be much more useful to my business overall, but I was concerned about the issues that had been discussed:
1) Powered firewire port. I'd get around this using a 6 pin to 4 pin adapter.
2) P2 import glitch. I'd hopefully prevent this problem by copying disk images instead of importing straight from P2 to FCP.
3) It was unclear if DV Rack 2.0 HD was working on Macs in Bootcamp. You and Mark cleared this up.
4) Lack of PCMCIA card slot. Hopefully, Duel System's adapter will be out soon. In the meantime I can use DV Rack and import from the camera.

So I'm leaing toward the MBP. I've been trying to hold out for the Merom chip, but Apple has been pokey.

I have a firestore which unfortunately at this time is not supported by DVRack, but I like using my battery powered USB on the go drive which I hook up via USB in the field and it copies image then hook it up to FCP, works great, you can copy the contents folder into a folder named whatever you want and there you go. I am also waiting for the Adapter, but almost all the new good PCs are forgoing the PCMCIA also, so that is a universal issue.
As far as MacBook Pro Im having no issues, and Ive never had any issues importing P2.

I'm almost afraid to ask -- what sort of support are you looking for?

I got my MBP in July and installed Bootcamp. Does anyone know how to tell which version of Bootcamp is being used? I'm wondering if there is an update.

My Windows Device Manager does not list a section for "Scanners and Imaging Devices", so I don't see how to remove the iSight driver. There are 4 or 5 devices that are in the Unknown section.

I am running MacDrive 6 which has been a bit of a headache. When it is running, my DVD drive won't read CD's, Windows Defender won't update, and other problems surface. It finally corrupted a system file and I had to re-install it. The reason it is useful to have is that my eSata drive can be formatted with HFS+ (Mac formatting) and I can just move the drive over to my edit station.

In any event I don't expect Serious Magic to solve my MBP/Bootcamp headaches. I do have 2GB Ram and am looking forward to the patch mentioned earlier in this thread. What I see when I run DV Rack 2.0 is that windows open up with the video outside of the application (titlebar = ActiveMovie Window) for playback. The monitor freezes. These windows then don't respond to the DV Rack controls. I was told that my video drivers may be at issue, but I'm not sure that's true.

I should mention that the single mouse button on the MBP is a complete pain under Windows, even if you can use Shift-F10 most of the time to get the same effect.
