DVFilm Epic I - Realtime DSLR editing in Vegas 9 Pro

That's true but with Epic I you can finish your edit instead of waiting for your transcodes, and that's the whole point. We've heard from editors that set up a transcode job overnight and found that it cratered or ran out of disk space, and did not complete. You can waste time transcoding files you end up not using. The transcode files can be huge. Also with Epic there are no transcoding losses.

That sounds sweet. I need to give it a shot. I've always loved editing sound in Sonic Foundry apps... Need to give Vegas and your app another shot.

so when you are ready to export your edit- you can turn off the proxies and render from the original camera file?

It sounds like Vasst gearshift but streamlined and behind the scenes. This is nice- I am downloading the demo. I usually use cineform, but the file sizes are ginormous

That's correct, they can be switched off with one click, or you can make it completely automatic
if you always edit in Preview Half or Quarter but render full size.

Epic REPLACES the vegas quicktime plugin and provides reliable support with no crashes. There are several design features in Epic that make that possible. We can provide more details.

I'm going to try this, but if it is true it's worth it for no crashes alone.

Someone please let me know how this works out. Ive had two projects die on me due to crashing. If this is the answer to my problems I will be forever grateful. I would try the demo but I deleted this original files after transcoding with streamclip. Unless this program works with streamclip files???

Hey dtjohns,

If you converted to Avid DXNhd Quicktime movies (which I think you have to for DXNhdon PC) then Epic can use them. I just tested in on my XP Vegas 9/32bit and it worked.

Make a copy of your Vegas project and then try out the demo of Epic I. The demo limits the clips to 5 secs so it may shortening your clips on the timeline, but it should be able to show you have it works.

Best,
Andy

how long before it will work with the latest quicktime? I remember back in the day, I had to keep an old version of QT on my machine for your Maker product...

It appears that the bug with the latest QT 7.6.6 has to do with Vegas. With Epic I uninstalled, we can't view h.264 quicktimes from Canon DSLR's at all. There is no video and only audio on our XP workstation.

I believe people are experiencing problems with Vegas and latest QT in general.

Downloading QT 7.6 from the apple site is probably the best workaround at the moment.

Thanks,
Andy

doesn't work for me, the camera files still play back at 10 fps even at preview 1/2 and the little "I" in the corner is showing low quality.

I removed my current QT, installed 7.6
installed per web site tutorial
check the configuration box

Dragged clip to timeline, and still very slow playback. I looked in the folder that the file resides in- no proxies created. Am I doing something wrong here? I think DVfilm should consider a short tutorial video.

Also, does Epic alwsays have to be running in the background (located in the task bar). Even when I close out windows, its still running, which prompts me to need to turn it off manually? Since the preview quality adjustment in Vegas has the same effects, can I just "exit the epic control" and leave it off?

Are you getting a progress bar when you drop the clips into the timeline? If not there is something wrong, I would fill out a support request, http://dvfilm.com/supportForm.htm

You can exit, but it has to run, and should start automatically, when Vegas is started.

:embarassegreat, I uninstalled epic and now no QT movies can be imported into Vegas

Re-install Epic and disable the plugin. This restores the standard Vegas QT plugin. Then uninstall Epic if you wish.

sorry Marcus- user error :). Finally got it up and running- it works fine now, and is pretty handy acutally. Good job- just bought a copy.

My suggestion for a future update would be to have the plugin automatically exit itself from the taskbar when Vegas is closed. Keeps things lean.

If you're editing green screen and making chroma key stuff, would transcoding to Cineform be noticeably visually better than using this Epic method?

I don't think Epic would be much better, although theoretically the Epic image is better because there's no transcoding losses on the final render. The main point of Epic is that you can start work right away without trancoding.

But cineform neoScene interpolates up to 4:2:2 colour space. Are you saying that Epic also does this, so is theoretically better for green screen and in general?

Yes, Epic is also 4:2:2, and 10-bit YUV if you put it in that mode.

Generally the less processing you do on an image the better it is, so with no transcoding you are as close to the original image as you can get.

hmm... Well I bought epic, but so far it doesn't seem to be working.

Problem 1: When I select 'High Quality', it still runs off the proxy: the image still looks very low quality and has 'proxy' in the top left corner.

Problem 2: Rendered videos just comes out black!

Problem 3: With '10 bit YUV mode' selected, the whole system becomes slow and unable to edit. Selecting 'low quality mode' makes no difference and is identical to 'high quality mode'

Problem 4: In the 'quality window', the high quality icon sometimes flicks back to the low quality icon on its own.

System Specs: i7 920, 6GB RAM, Win XP, Vegas

:(

So, now I have tried uninstalling EPIC completely from my system (the demo and the full version). Hoping this would work, I have rebooted my system, went to re-download the software and install it fresh, but I can't since the full version is no longer available for download.

I've read all the emails and followed the links to download the full EPIC installation file, but just get to a dead end.. a website page that says "your software has been emailed to you. Please make sure you check your SPAM folder!" hmm... nothing in spam folder, nothing anywhere. I've tried all of this a few times, and nothing.

EDIT: Support have sorted it and I now have the software! Trying it out now..

Hopefully some of these questions are addressed now in the revised quick start guide that we have here
http://www.dvfilm.com/epic/EpicTutorial1.htm

which is intended to cover some common problems with Vegas 9, but

Problem 1: When I select 'High Quality', it still runs off the proxy: the image still looks very low quality and has 'proxy' in the top left corner.

In the normal mode Preview-Half shows the proxy and Preview-Full shows the original file.

Problem 3: With '10 bit YUV mode' selected, the whole system becomes slow and unable to edit. Selecting 'low quality mode' makes no difference and is identical to 'high quality mode'

Vegas does not support reduced frame size in YUV mode so on some computers you get slower playback. YUV mode is intended mostly for final rendering and not editing. The new quickstart guide recommends to leave it off (off is the default).

Problem 4: In the 'quality window', the high quality icon sometimes flicks back to the low quality icon on its own.
the revised quick start guide has the solution for this: turn off the dynamic RAM cache which is not needed for EPIC anyway (set the max size to zero).

Any other problems?
