DVD / HD Comparison

He states that the transfer to DVD is one of the best yet. What did they do that was so different from the other big budget films transfering to DVD and where does he find reference for this?

I am not suprised to see the HD DVD looking much better, but the mouse over comparison is pretty neat.

Were both disks using the same encoding method? BluRay just recently got H.264 titles, whereas HD DVD has had them for awhile. You might have been comparing MPEG2 to H.264, in which case HD DVD easily would have wiped the floor with BluRay.

It's not surprising at all. The DVD is going to be a 720x480 image that is stretched to 852x480. Hence, a down-rezed 1920x1080 sample is going to look sharper in 852x480 since it will be providing the full horizontal resolution. It also seems like his re-sampling was a bit off for the DVD as many of the images look every slighly warped. Finally, it should be noted that DVD uses the less pleasing MPEG 2 compression over the more effecient and generally milder ones of HD-DVD. It's the same reason why most HD-DVD movies look better than Blu-Ray films. They both are at 1920x1080p but most Blu-Ray films are still using MPEG 2 so, even though they can fit more on a disc, HD-DVD looks better at the same resolution.

As the guy states he is using the Elecard MPEG2 player to capture the HD stream, he must be comparing MPEG2 to MPEG2?

It seems obvious that high-bitrate MPEG2 looks better than the 8mbps maximum that a DVD can use.

So I don't see the point either.
