DVCPROHD dub to HDV

Facing the challenge of DVCPRO-HD storage without a studio deck and having exceeded 10TB... I'm starting to seek for solutions and I wondered...

Has anyone tried dubbing DVCPRO-HD finished projects to HDV tapes?

Yes, we'll lose our beloved 4.2.2 color space and everything, but interframe codec shouldn't be such an issue here, or at least will equal DVD performance. And it sounds as a good way to save HD projects.

I think I'll try it through FCP Batch Export, though it's bound to take some time.

I'd avoid that with a bargepole.

Had a comping job in Shake last year. One shot kept looking shite, all blocky around details in a closeup of a blokes face talking.

Seemed I'd set HDV as the codec by mistake, probably a 4-in-the-morning mistake. Comparing the properly encoded shot with the HDV version I was shocked at the amount of approximation that went on around eyes, lips etc, and also the frozen areas that weren't updating every frame, like cheeks, forehead etc.

All these were long GOP artifacts.

If you're prepared to throw away a large percentage of your image, then go ahead and archive to HDV. Otherwise get yourself a hot-swap SATA setup like Firmtek, a crate of 500GB SATA drives and sleds, and backup to those.

Might as well just throw it away if that's the plan. 1TB of storage is pretty cheap these days. Get another firewire drive and put it there. Or rent an LTO drive and store.

What about Archiving in ProRes HQ? You can always write it back to DVCproHD correct? Or am I is wrong?
