DVCPROHD Down converting to 4:3

Hello,

I am looking for a workflow in FCP.

The scenario is:

720p DVCPROHD footage shot.
Edited in FCP
Now I am looking to export the footage to SD

I use the presets in Quicktime but none of them seem to be holding the aspect ratio correctly when I downconvert. Any suggestions?

Are u in NTSC land or PAL land? Anyway this is for NTSC -

In FCP create a new sequence then go to sequence settings -

Frame size: CCIR601 NTSC (40:27)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
Field: none for 720p, upper for 1080
Compressor: 10Bit or 8Bit uncompressed
Click Ok.

Go back to your HD sequence and copy edited files from the time line and paste them in your new SD sequence and render. It will be 4:3 letterboxed.

If you want full frame 4:3 click your motion tab - scale to 90% for 720p or 60% for 1080. Then render again and wait....a really long time :)

After your done rendering then you can export your movie as 4:3 SD

When going to DVD Studio Pro then Exporting with Compressor works better for me. It retains the 16:9 just fine for 1080 and 720. I have not tried to squeeze HD into 4:3, but there are settings in Compressor to do that. I have also mixed 720p and 480i "compressor" produced files in DVD Studio Pro. You can tell one from the other by the contrasty look of the 480 next to the what used to be the 720 file. But the aspect ratio is 16:9 as set in Compressor.

Look again at Exporting to Quicktime. There are a few target formats to try.

(using FCS 2...can't remember what 5.1.4 did)

what are you trying to do? Make a 4:3 letter box or just make a DVD so you can burn it and watch it on your TV?
