DVCPROHD 720p 25PN in FCP 5?

I just got an HVX200 and after shooting some footage in DVCPROHD 720p 25PN with the variable frames speed at 50fps I found that in FCP 5 I had no option for a timeline or sequence present under that setting.

I only found 1080i 50, 1080i 60, 720p 24, 720p 30, and 720p 60 - but no option for 720p 25 let alone 720p 25PN. Anyone know how to help?

My reason for shooting with overcranking is because I hope to capture surfing images at high speed for good slo mo's.

Any help is much appreciated >>> Thanks <<<

Hey talon,

This is what you do:
Go to http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/ and tell Apple about your frustration :)

Final Cut Pro still does not support DVCPRO HD 720 (pal framerates) or native 1080p, only i. I hate it, but all we can do is wait around for Appple to release Final Cut Pro 6.0 Please send them some short, helpfull pointers via the feedback site.

Get yourself a demo of HD Log:

http://www.imagineproducts.com/hdlog.htm

it supports the capture to QT of 720 25Pn footage on a Mac (aswell as all the other PAL formats aswell).

In Final Cut you then set up a 720P 60 timeline and bring in your 720 25Pn footage.

Also in Final Cut if you set up a 1080 50i timeline with the fields set to none you can bring in 1080 25P footage, edit work on it blah.

hope this helps

By the way, the demo will be changing slightly as we try to integrate 720p50 into FCP as tightly as possible. Originally, we converted 720p50 frames to 720p60 frames during import time as a proof of concept, but we now have a passthrough codec that will convert frames on the fly and send them to the 720p60 codec for decompression.

The big benefit is that you will be able to view this type of footage immediately in HD Log, as you would with the other formats. The second benefit is that the original frame data will remain in the QuickTime files that we write, and so if Apple integrates support into their codec, you can delete our passthrough codec and the files should continue to work as normal (possibly after changing their codec ID, depending on how Apple decides to implement this).

Note, the latest HD Log will automatically remove the 2:2 pulldown from 25P footage so that it will be a true 25 fps, compatible with FCP. We leave 50p as 50 fps, and so while you can view it in HD Log, it won't transfer to FCP through XML until they add support for 50 fps.

In any case, we're interested in hearing feedback on how well this new solution works in different configurations. If you'd like to try it, send me a message on here and I'll send you a link.

Gary, consider me in! Since I'll mainly be using 720p 25 for the slow motion and fast motion effects, and I plan to integrate this on a 1080p 25 timeline, can you tell me if there's any motion problem, like additional stuttering or frame skipping in this process? I imagine I would be converting trough media manager to 1080p 25... Is there any way you can input on HD Log a convertion from the original 720p 25pn directly to 1080 50i/25p in PAL? This would be EXCELENT, and very time saving for most of us PAL users... I believe that many of us are already working on the 1080p 25 format due to the lack of 720p25 support from Apple, so this would be a great plus!

Thanks in advance

Sergio

I don't envision any problem converting 720 25pn to 1080 50i/25p. I'll keep this mind as a potential export option.

Gary, If this is done for the silver and gold versions, I'm sold. I will try to use the raylight demo- silver ASAP. I have some Macau Dragon Boat slow motion footage shot at 720pn and 1080p 25. I'll try to post this clip and report the results here. Also, I've noticed a significant resolution difference between 720p and 1080p in the PAL camera, displayed on my panasonic crt... Maybe its the 1440 vs the 960 resolution?

Anyway, I'll report soon- with footage ! :) (if I can find a friendly person to host it, of course ! :) )
