DVCPro50 WMV from the HVX200

Drawing class, that's cool. I like to sketch for the fun. Gesture etc. Im just an amateur at it, but I use the skill for pre production work. At that link, take a look at some from my sketch book. There are a dozzen your so. Your welcome Danilo, glad you liked the shots from the H1....

Thanks Pappas! It's stunning! Very very stunning! :)
Soon (about 2 hours) I must go to my teacher for drawing exercises, and I've not sleep tonight! Thanks a lot! :)
This community consumes me! :)

I've seen your arts too, good sketches:) Seeing your style I'll suggest Burne Hogarth methods for mastering anathomies :) Give a look to his methods, they're basical to improve drawing skills. I draw more as japanese, I really like Tanaka Tatsuyuki, type it on Google images (you will be stunned by his work!), I really like Yoshiyuki Sadamoto too! :) The character design of Steam Boy of Katsuhiro Otomo is stunning too, it's based on his original design, but the character designer of Anime I dunno his name. He's my recent favourite.

I made this from your Xl H1 grabs, is just for fun, it could be a commercial for Canon, you know:) It taked 2 minutes so it's not great:

This may destroy chromakey altogether. The camera will need very ample light and I don't see any way from the supplied clips to salvage the images. Turning detail down doesn't help much.
Noise is very dissapointing after all the hype but the images do not lie.

Hi Stephen... as you know I was experimenting around with this set of clips from Kaku Ito the other day and posted some examples. The clip you used for the still image is from a very noisy clip with high gain.

The clip I chose to use for my example was from was the least noisy of the bunch, yet not perfect by a long shot. Flickering overhead lights, etc. Kaku's voice over on my clip claims he used Cine D gamma and "regular" detail and no mention of gain. We've since learned that default detail accents the noise/grain and lowering that setting dramatically improves the image.

My point is that these are the ONLY DVCPRO 50 samples you have seen, and as Bob Diaz mentioned on a different thread, there's no way you can form a valid global opinion without other data points.

A good example is this is myself! Last week I saw Kaku's infamous "Chopper" and Bamboo clips. No context to go on, but I knew and loudly proclaimed one thing, "I can't key that!". Then other samples came up that looked much better, Barry had advice on the sweet spot for detail setting, and then the knowledge came out that the gain on the "Chopper" clip was +12db!

Let's wait until we get samples from people who have grown comfortable with the optimal settings. I predict from things I've seen from a wider sampling, that the keying ability of this camera in SD will be best in class... heck, maybe best in several classes above it!

Jim Arthurs

Arri D20 is still not for sale, for tests only and should not be more expensive than competitors in that line. But I did not give you the link because of that reason. It is about the VALUE CONSTANT that you can call when you want to COMPARE. With low-end HD you don't have a constant value it is about a mess of values and that is what we are facing right now. Everybody wants to be a winner, but there are no winners. Also no looser(S). There is the constant and something that LOOKS like that a bit closer or far (away).

I agree Jim,
I was wondering why Stephen decided to pick the DVCPRO50 flower scene that was using gain, as opposed to the one that was not?

Steve

Maybe he wanted to key the noise. lol

No seriously, anybody doing a chromakey is going to light the setting like they should. Why go through the hassle if you want to do half a job? I was always told that a good chromakey needs quite a lot of light. So why are we discussing low light performance and chromakeying?

I understandy why you would think that but I have downloaded the entirety of the available DVCPro50 clips and put them together in that wmv that is referenced at the very beginning of the thread. I've included the one where the detail is turned down as well.

The are ALL riddled with noise when sent out to broadcast monitor and to regular TV. I've been hosting 2 Gigs worth of files for a couple of months and it finally had some bad reprocussions to my ISP. Now the FTP server is shut down for a while and I got a nice hand slap for the excessive bandwidth!

Can anyone offer hosting for the files? email me....

What a waste of a thread.

Okay, the camera is noisy, it is a piece of junk, we got it, everybody just move over onto the Canon thread now. Come on, move along, there is nothing to see here.

Thanks Jim finally for a voice of reason. Would the noise be about the same in DVCPRO50 as in HD? Some circuitry is different so I would imagine it would be different. With same sensors not sure how much. I don't think comparing DVCPRO50 to other camera HD is apples to apples. Without a camera in front of me to setup myself I'm withholding judgement.

several people on this thread appear to be on a mission or have an agenda.

BobDiaz,

The clips themselves have titles showing what the camera settings are. Unfortunately I got a nasty gram from my FTP host provider about hosting 2 Gigs of downloads and the server spikes are unmanageable.

I'll gladly post the clips elsewhere if anyone offers space and then everything will come into context.

My problem is that I am running a 1.7GHz P4 PC with Windows 98, I can't play the clips to read the settings. Even when I try to play a WMF, the images is downsized to my 1024x768 screen. Also the images are so big, I get about 0.15 frames per second with WMF.

Could someone please play the clip in question and post: Gain = xxx, Detail = xxx, ...

Thanks,

Bob Diaz

to reduce ur load, maybe u can make it a TORRENT ....

How to make a trackerless torrent?

"Many of you have blogs and websites, but dont have the resources to set up a tracker. In the new version, we've created an optional 'trackerless' method of publication. Anyone with a website and an Internet connection can host a BitTorrent download!"

Maybe when I get home, I'll try to download it and make a torrent....

Ouch, that progressive clip is just disastrous. And that's with a detail setting of -5?

I don't think Barry's shootout footage is going to look like that, but my fear is that because they're constantly tweaking these cameras we're all going to get slightly different versions of the HVX that don't corrolate with each other until there's a mass-production line working around March or April. I don't want to be a guinea pig, especially if I'm laying down seven grand for this thing.

The progressive clip contains both detail levels of 0 and -5. What you're seeing is as close to posting the raw MXF as you can get.

I dont know, it seems like gain +12 footage to me. Especially compared to the other footage we have seen in SD - remember barry's slowmo liquid footage? He downconverted that from 720 60p to the mini dv tape and it looked super clean. I'm going to wait until it is in my hands.

This footage is total junk - why is being posted? Look at it with waveform scope (or just watch the auto exposure bloom at around 18:00-19:00). Terrible underexposure and then severe highlight clipping. Use your zebras, turn off auto iris/gain and post some useful footage. Plus, the detail setting is different between the two takes and as well as the lighting. Any camera, including 35mm will look like junk shot like this.

All this footage tells us is that shooting on full auto going from a dark room to a daylight window is going to cause problems. That's helpful.

The clip here is, quite simply put, garbage. I have seen HVX DV50 keyed, and the words the 3D artist were most effusive.

I should have access to a production model tomorrow.

But frankly, I can't wait until some time next week when we can put all four of 'em in a room together and shoot under the same conditions, and the results will be known, and posting horrid clips will lose all claims of authenticity.

Suffice it to say, I've shot DV50 on a prerelease HVX, and this clip, my friends, is not what HVX DV50 looks like. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

Most cameras are noisy under lowlight, which is expected. The clips speak to me too. It says this isn't a point and shoot camera.

The clips speak to me. All of the DVCPro50 MXF's posted are noisy under low light. It'd be nice if it wasn't so, but it is. As I wrote above, adding light would probably make the CCD's come to life.

@Barry, those clips came directly off Kaku's P2 card from his HVX200. Are you sure you want to write that they did not?
