DVCPRO HD bits question.

Brian,

Thank you for your answer (regarding Barry I had already did it). As you can confirm it better the first three PMs are only a joke about a smiley in my native language that you posted here and I ask you there. The last one, yes, it is more serious and because I don't like unclarified points, I'd like for an enlightenment*, as available as possible. So, it will be for you as soon as possible. Thanks anyway and in advance!

Emanuel

* Sampling frequency? What are those values?...

Alright, ignore all those numbers.

At least in NTSC, there is more data recorded in 1080i HDCAM (140Mbps) than 1080i DVCPRO-HD (100Mbps). It is distributed differently, but there is definitely more information there.

But...

There is no software HDCAM codec.
Affordable handheld cameras do not shoot HDCAM.

In conclusion, you have to decide if you want to be an engineer or a cameraman. If you want to be an engineer, you may do well to pick another industry -- you kind of need to be Japanese to work in camera electronics. Or, be an American publisher...

By virtue of your participation on this forum, I assume you want to be a cameraman? Then quit worrying about HDCAM, you're unlikely to ever need it.

Its very very very important when discussing the advantages of HDCAM that you be clear of the pain in the ass it is to work with. HDCAM is compressed on tape, but unless you use XPRI and use (of course) a sony only pipe called HD-SDTI , you cant just pipe HDCAM out of camera into your NLE. Instead, you need to use HD-SDI into your computer at full bandwidth then recompress it into another format. so you take a re-compress step there.,, and of course, you need one hell of a raid array to make that proxy.

This also means you cant dub tapes... even with the most used JH-3 Hdcam deck. The JH-3 recompresses uncompressed HD-SDI , and has a mountain of problems decompressing HDCAM in the first place.

Last year we shot a feature on HDCAM, I was excited to do the online and dropped $10k into my system to beable to handle the HD-SDI workflow. It was a total friggin nightmare, and at the end of the day I did a proxy from the JH-3 deck to DVCpro25 and we did the offline that way.

DVCpro HD is gonna be a blessing.

Brian,

Thanks for your amused (and wise) answer :) [you are a cool dvxuser.com member, as all we know; in my case, as your posts reader, before our exchange private-public messages]

And regarding HDCAM, I hope to never need it!

Cheers!
Emanuel

<PS> Jarred, thanks for your blessed enlightenment!* ...very useful...

...but I have the ultimate question about DVCPRO-HD vs HDCAM concerning compression differences...

...I well know HDCAM (Cinealta Gamma, film-out results, etc.) and regarding DVCPRO-HD expectations for big screen (35mm and digital projection?)...

...must I accept, without hope, more noticeable artifacts?

*And for your work (as dvxuser.com/best www forum engineer) too!

I think it all depends on your subject matter. Plus your involvement in the local video community. HDCAM was the first major step up from SD. It was first and early adopters jumped on that bandwagon. There have been many features/docfeatures shot with the DVX100 that made it into the mainstream. Last year I shot the Dallas segments of a doc feature for an LA producer, the doc feature will be shown at Sundance. It was compelling subject matter that we could have shot with a VHS camcorder. StarWars, Sin City were shot on HDCAM. These producers could have shot on IMAX if they wanted too. They used HDCAM because of the ease in editing with there already proven workflow. These director/producers can afford the multi-million dollar editing set-ups they have created. You can even mix your sound at Skywalker ranch if you have the bucks. Point being, look at your project and figure out how you can do it right without spending your life fortune.

Good point HVXguy, small correction though, Sin-City and the last Star Wars where shot on HDCAM-SR, which is a mile away from HDCAM.

The same to you, Jarred, because as all we know, it's not the same!...

In regards to the compression and Mb per frame ratio in DVCPROHD, I was under the impression that 1080 60P didn't fit into 100Mb/s (if it did, wouldn't Panasonic offer us 1080 60P?) Aren't they recording 30 (or 24) frames and distributing it over 60i? Giving us 100/30= 3.33 Mb/s per frame?

Techie?...

...Am I not the cameraman?

LOL!
I didn't say that you are "the" amused dvxuser.com member? You confuse me with your words! Or I must say...numbers?... :)

yah, we like you, man! just a light hearted, good natured nick name, that's all. :)
:) It's funny these things on web...'cause the idea that we have about ourselves or each other cannot the same that it is, in another context. So, who is Emanuel? Or even Jarred Land despite his/your work that all we know here? Or thisiswells? Or you that reads it! Your nick name, Brian, for instance, always remembers me the other Wells; and your photo that I think to have seen (?) somewhere over here, a person that I well know (no, it's not you, another one that I well know). As well as I am here such as my non-native english allows me. But it's true that I'm not a bits & bytes engineer but at same time I can say to Luis @here that 8GB aren't 8,000MB but 8,192MB because 1GB=1,024MB; a multiple of 8; 1byte=8bits; as I posted there. OK it's not a big deal but also it's not a matter of english writing. Just numbers. And always when I'm wrong or I just don't know, I'd like, as I appreciate to say, for an enlightenment...and not to remain in darkness. After all, is not only a question of arithmetic*?...and things on net. :)

*According thefreedictionary.com: (...) rational numbers, real numbers (...)

<PS> Sorry my lecturer's tone if it will be the case.

Thx again for your support and Congrats again for the best HD tech www forum (period). And that's why as non-techie member that I am, I ask it until to have not an impossible but a possible answer. Mostly when it occurs that it exists. As well as I hate unanswered questions or unasked subjects, as you already have seen.

<PS> And I'm trying to be a kind of spokesman - why not if that place will be always (to everyone in a forum like this) an open job? - of those community members, as you said above, with embarrassment to put indie filmmaking on top of the agenda, as well the questions that all have it.

i edited HDcam on my desktop.. granted its not a normal desktop, and as Barry said, its hell. Might as well take that 3 month vacation to Africa while you wait for it to render.. and while your there dig up some diamonds cause your gonna need them to pay for the storage requirements.

that mustbe what the MAC Quad is for.....
