DVCPRO Frame Rate Conversion

Ok, I have been searching all over the place, but there is something I just cant figure out.

I have been using my HVX at 720/24pN and using the frame rate features to crank for some time. I film action sports and never know whats going to happen, therefore it would be great to film so that I can choose the speed of the film in post, rather than at the time it is shot.

As I understand it, I should be able to do this by filming in 720/60p at 60 frames and using the DVCPRO Frame Rate Converter in final cut, to change the frame rate (it took me a while to figure all that out).

So I do all of that, import the clip, perform a DVCPRO conversion to 30 or 24 frames, and the result mystifies me (I am working in a Final Cut Pro DVCPRO 24p timeline).

When I drag the original clip down to the timeline (60fps), it asks if I want to change the frame rate to match the sequence settings. Regardless of what I choose, the clip plays in what looks like (normal speed). The same happens with an "exported" 60fps clip from the frame rate converter.

When I drag an exported 24 or 30 frame clip onto the timeline, I get the same query, and regardless of the choice I make, the clip appears to play in slow motion.

It seems to me that 24fps clips should be regular speed. 30fps clips should be slightly slower and 60fps should be very slow...

Anyone know what am I missing?

Yep- unfortunately the new multiformat timeline cancels out over and undercranking clips on a 24p timeline. So you need to ctrl-click on the clip in your timeline and access the speed settings. Set the % and uncheck frame blending. For example 60fps on a 24p timeline should be set at around 40%.

Thanks for the quick response....

I suppose I will find out, but what does this do to quality. Is the quality still top notch as long as you hit one of the magic speed numbers like 40%? Because it is subtrating information, rather than adding it?

Or is there a quality loss as compared to doing the cranking in the camera rather than in post?

The quality will be ideal. The frames are there, FCP is by default throwing them away to achieve the matching frame rate- which in this case you don't want.
