dvcpro 50 on mini dv

But you are talking about mild compression (crates, mac truck) vs. heavy compression (yugo). You can heavily compress the chickens but the chickens you get out of the Yugo will no longer be the chickens you put in.

Likewise, you could compress DVCPRO50 onto MiniDV25, but then it would no longer be DVCPRO, in would be MiniDV.

DVCPRO 50 could easily be recorded onto a MiniDV tape, it's just digital data. The problem comes with recording and playing it at real time (50Mbps) because you would probably get dropouts due to the tape speed that would be required.

Oh, I see, it's all just digital data... So of course we should then be able to put DVCProHD, HDV, and MiniDV all onto one tape at the same time. Oh, and also slow the tape down so it can record 3 hours on a single tape! Data is (are) data, right?? ;)

Yeah, you could, if you had a recording deck that would do it. Of course, a MiniDV tape can only fit a certain amount of data reliably, around 15GB. So you could archive around 30 minutes of DVCPRO50 footage on it, not 3 hours.

The slower the tape speed, the smaller the track width, the less reliable the recording. You can of course use thinner tape, like with 80 minute tapes, but again this has negative effects on reliabillity

I asked Jan this very question at Chicago Resfest, and she said it cannot. She stated the miniDV format is not physically capable of 50mbps.

"wait for a confirmation from a duly authorized panasonic rep before snookering up information on the ability of the hvx200 to record DVCpro50 to tape"

Sorry to be unclear, I didn't mean that the HVX would record anything but DV to tape, I was just pointing out that any digital signal can be recorded to any digital recording media given enough time - That's the problem, MiniDV cannot write 50Mbps reliably.

Just to be clear - The HVX200 will only write DV to tape. DVCPRO50 and DVCPROHD require P2 cards or external recorder.

Sorry, mmm, I read your post too quickly and too much in light of what was going on in the beginning of the thread. Of course a MiniDV tape could theoretically hold DVCPro50 footage (but the quality of the tape lessens the likelihood of success). However, as Jan has said, a deck such as that in the HVX200 is physically incapable of the speed that DVCPro50 would require (let alone DVCProHD). I see now that your argument was not speaking about the HVX200 at all, just the matter of DV formats and tape media...

(And of course my suggestion of 3 hours recording time was just to make my ridiculous suggestion look even more ridiculous--stemming from seeing the endless queries on this site about "Why can't the HVX record DVCPro to tape?")

Are you sure? What about a pair of pants that's one size too small. Sometimes you can squeeze into them if you try real hard. Can't we try and squeeze DVCpro onto MiniDV?

Or how about a car analogy? A big Mac Truck can cart fifty crates of live chickens. Technically, we could squeeze fifty crates of chickens into a yugo right? If we try hard enough? Yugo's are built pretty solid, and we'd probably only occasionally experience chicken crates dropping out.

Good point sir, and a find illustration of why I'm holding off on declarative statements about the Hvx100 until we hear something official from Sony reps.

If I could just toss a wrench monkey into the situation, what would happen if we were to actually record the chicken crates being packed into the Yugo with the Hvx100? would it be easier for the Hvx100 to record it to DVCpro50? I'm thinking the compression of the chickens might facilitate a smoother data flow of the DVCpro50 codec to mini DV tape. Just food for thought.

Here's my question: would it be possible to put a DVCPro50 LABEL on a MiniDV tape? You don't sell the steak, you sell the sizzle, right? Are there any plans to make MiniDV-sized DVCPro50 labels to fit on MiniDV tapes without modification?

Yeah, get the AMQ's. They're (supposedly) DLT quality cassettes. What this means, I don't know, but it sounds impressive and (supposedly) justifies the $13 price!

In fact, there is nothing special about DVCProHD tapes. They are the same plastic and rust used for DVCPro. The biggest difference, as noted in the SMPTE standards, is the use of 'Metal Particle' instead of 'Metal Evaporative' rust.

Come to think of it, those AMQ's sound a little more advanced than DVCPro! (supposedly)

I think we've already heard what the Sony reps have to say about the HVX200. Something like "@^%$%# !@*&!)(* (*!# ^!%^^#$I#% ^!%^@^%@# *((*@^$@ !%!%&$# !#$*(".

Just thinking out loud for a second, does Sony or Panasonic or any of the other Chinese electronic firms have any plans to release a DVCPRO45 or even a DVCPRO35 format? I think that could solve a lot of the P2 problems associated with the HVX100.

The whole point of DVCPRO50 is that it is extremely less compressed than standard DV and uses the extra bandwidth for increased color space. Making a "DVCPRO35" would mean more compression and defeat the entire purpose. It seems like everyone wants to have their cake and eat it, too. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I really don't care that I can only get 8 minutes of DVCPROHD on one 8GB P2 card; it's the much higher bitrate and quality data that I'm after. If all you care about is cramming as much data into the smallest space possible, then go get HDV. That's not what the HVX is about.

No one has answered me about the labels? I could make them myself but I'd prefer metallic style glossy labels to really look professional.

I think glossy is nice. But would the glossy label cause any compression artifacts? afterall, "glossy" rhymes with "lossy".

Or better yet, just wait until an authorative source from Sony chimes in with a declarative statement on the subject. Again, the Hvx100 won't be released until December, there's no point in printing out a bunch of glossy labels that might negatively impact the Hvx100"s performance.

I think Brianluce is having us on. And he forgot that irony and kidding are best served with one of these.:cheesy::thumbsup::happy::beer::evil:

At least I was kidding with my Yugo/Truck reference.

It is now offical, we have been waiting for this hardware for too long. We are starting to act like kids debating whether the new Hans Solo should be able to holster his gun on the leg, or the waist.
We need the damn camera! (and a storage solution)
