DVC Pro 50 to DVD

In Barry's HVX book, he explains that DVC Pro 50 is the preferred format for DVD distribution. Does this mean that a 3:00 project shot at 720p will actually look worse on SD DVD than one shot on DVC Pro 50? Thanks to all who respond.

DVCPro50 is less heavily compressed than DVCProHD, so if you only need SD and don't need to crop/pan, DVCPro50 is probably a better choice.

I guess I'm still confused. Lets use this example. Lets say I shoot a guy talking for 3 or 4 minutes. One camera is shooting DVC prod 50 widescreen. The another camera is shooting 720p. I burn 2 seperate DVD's. I play back both DVD's at the same time on side by side wide screen tv's. Which one will look the best? Thanks

The DVCPro50 image will have a slight quality edge.

The HVX creates all of its recording formats from an internal 1080P image. If you output to 720P first and then create your 480 DVD, the image is scaled twice, once by 2/3 to go from 1080 to 720, and then a second time to create 480. The repeated scaling by a fractional amount will soften the picture somewhat.

If you record DVCPro50, the image gets scaled only once, and that will help it retain more detail. The recording format itself is also less heavily compressed.

I am Italian and I don't know well the English: I apologize in advance.
If I have not understood badly, even if I record in 1080p the image is scaled once.
Am I saying a correct thing or I am being wrong?
For getting best results on dvd, do I record 1080i/25p or 1080i/50i?
I ask forgiveness for my ignorance.
Thanks.
Massimo

Yes, if you are outputting to DVD, the 1080p image needs to be scaled once. The image is not scaled at all in the camera, 1080p is the only recording format that the camera supports that doesn't need to be resized from what it processed internally.

Whether you shoot 25p or 50i is your choice -- it depends on whether you want a progressive image or not.
