dv tapes in different cameras

Is it ok to film on a dv tape with the dvx100a, watch it VTR style on a cheaper (but nice) canon DV camera (300 dollar range), and then put it back in the camera to film more? would that be a problem and mess of the dvx100a tape heads?
 
I wouldn't do it. How do you know what kind of tape has gone through the Canon? Wet lube? Dry Lube? It's also possible to pick up dirt that has previously been deposited on the Canon's heads or tape path.
I occasionally rewind a tape for a review in my DVX100A (just a few scenes, not a whole tape) without issue.
What you don't want to do is shuttle the tape back and forth, as the tape transport of the DVX (or any dv camera for that matter) is not as robust as a deck made for the rigors of editing.

Yes it does. I already did alot of back and forth editing on the dvx100a when i first got it (used) it now has 755 hrs. started with about 550. i feel so bad about that. I didnt know I was nieve.
But thats why I bought the Cannon. I will have about 60 tapes from two different documentary projects to capture and I plan to use the cannon for that now. Its farily new and in great condition. I can only hope that I can handle all that. What do you think? will the cannon conk out before it gets them all done? Again, it seems almost completely brand new. the guy that sold it didnt want to but had to.
 
I'd run a head cleaner on the cannon first. Then you can pass them back and forth all you want as long as you stick to the same brand. A lot of us digitize to our editing system with a cheapo camera and record with our dvx. This cuts the head usage on the dvx in half. once it is ont he tape as 0's and 1's any cheap camera can play it back with the same quality.

As for the switching tape mediums hurting you camera...others will disagree with me and say it is absolutely crucial to stay with one brand. At my college we used a different brand every week. We ran a head cleaner tape through them once every 100 hours. When I graduated they had over 2800 hours and were still running strong. Now that being said, if you can stick to one brand its certainly not a bad idea. I think if you clean the cannon once with a head cleaner tape you should be fine and wont have to worry about cross contamination. Its not like head lube is a virus and uses the tape as a carrier to spread to more and more cameras.

I agree. Its best to stick with brand specified tapes. Cross contamintaion can not only damage the heads, but can be HELL on the alignments of unit as well which can of course.. lead to lower footage quality.
