DV Rack Workflow Help!!

Hello All

I just purchased DV Rack HD2. It is a little frustrating because there is no HD manual or info about the little AVI converter app that comes with it. If anyone knows where I can find an HD manual, vs the SD manual that comes with it, It would be appreciated.

I see much here on the forum about DVRack and workflows. I also see major headaches from some. I am having a rough time myself with it all. Im using all PC's with an HVX 200 for input, Premiere Pro and Avid Xpresso HD 5.4 or something.

Rather than rant about my headaches, I think it is best to listen, freshly, from others who do this with thier eyes closed. With that in mind, Can someone with explain a succsefful workflow to me using DV Rack HD for Input and either of the Editing apps listed above.

I have a DV 50 project to embark on next month. A big client for me. I want to have this down to a science. No Shoot first figure out howto later's here. I would like to edit in DV50 as well as DVCPro HD.

Many Thanks in advance, Im sure others will appreciate a successful workflow as well.

P.S. I keep hearing folks say they have luck with Time lapse in DVRack. Do tell how this is done if there is enough space and patience available from the author.

I have just started working with it myself, using Avid Exp Pro. This is what i know so far for doing 1080 24P:

There is no HD manual, just the SD manual and the help file for HD.

Right click either of the virtual monitors to select the feed from the Camera

Hit the Menu button on the virtual monitor and set the format to QTAVID and file type to MPG.

Select M2 mode if you are using a ground glass style lens adapter

Set up the import settings in Avid:

<Project> -> Settings -> Media Creation -> Import -> Video resolution DNxHD 175 MXF (although 115 should be lossless for DV50)

<Project> -> Settings -> Import -> ???

When you have is set upt properly you can drag the MOV files created by DV Rack into a bin and the import will happen as per the setup. there is no way around the import as Avid uses MXF files while DV rack creates MOVs.

This is by no means comprehensive, I'm still figuring it out myself. I'll publish a full workflow for 1080 24P when I get it down.

There is a serious magic forum at:

Good Luck,

Thanks

That is interesting, why do you set the QTAVID as an MPG file setting?

I have alot to learn about Avid, I have been setting everything to MXF and totally ignored anything else. I will try it.

I read somewhere that Avid is supposed to give me a firewire (DV25) monitor preview when editing DV50. I have yet to figure that out unless I have read some personal hope into the instructions somewhere. (I have no MOJO, just raw CPU horsepower and use a camera for an analoge transcoder)

Is there anyway to use DV Rack HD with the 720p 24pn mode?
No, the native modes are not sent out the 1394. You can use your editor to pull out the duplicate frames. I'm not the one to tell you how, tho.

When you select AVI2 or QTAVID DV Rack will pull out the single flagged interlaced frame that the advanced pulldown creates. When an advanced pulldown mode is selected it is very obvious as the flagged frame has terrible artifacts. You will need the update posted below to correct a bug that caused the wrong frame to be dropped. (Use quicktime to view a short MOV to verify the problem.)

Also, I created a dedicated capture computer featuring the necessary horsepower and redundancy. I also mounted the following in both my capture computer and editing computer:

http://www.satagear.com/451055_SATA_5.25_inch_Enclosure.html

This will allow me to carefully use hard drives to deliver the content to the NLE at full SATA bandwidth. A batch file will sync the files from the 'Ejected Clips' folder to the removeable drive. Once the removeable drive is inserted into the NLE the import process will run and the removeable drive will be off-sited for safe keeping.

A pair of these chassis cost $70 delivered.
