DV over Component.. can anybody confirm?

Hi folks,

No responses to my earlier post so I thought I'd repost once before giving up.

Can anybody confirm that you cannot in fact output a DV NTSC timeline from FCP via firewire to the HVX and output from the HVX to a monitor via COMPONENT?

I'm able to output from the HVX via S-video (so I know the signal is getting to the camera fine), but I wanted to get the most accurate color for color correction, and I'm not getting anything over the component out.

I read posts that say you cannot output an HD timeline over component, but they seem to suggest that you CAN output DV over component.

Can anybody confirm that you CAN or CANNOT do what I'm trying to do..?

Thanks in advance!
Carlos

Well you're already working in DV at 4:1:1. I really don't see how much of an advantage you'll get using component vs. s-video. Try it. Let us know if it works.

It's a huge difference. Up until now, most of our projects were shot in DV. We use our DSR-40 deck for capture and monitoring purposes. It's hooked up to a Sony production monitor by ways of composite, s-video and component I/O. In both composite and s-video images there's a lot of crosstalk and color bleeding, s-video being much cleaner. But component signal is far superior, images look sharper and no crosstalk.

I'm also quite interested in Cadman's question. But rather on the HD side of things. I'm going on a two month shoot with my HVX. I'll be recording to P2 cards and offloading on location into a laptop+ext HD. To add redundancy, every evening I will be importing the footage into FCP using another ext HD as Capture Scratch. It would be very useful to be able to screen the footage from FCP via the HVX to our Field Monitor or even the hotel's TV. Has anyone tried this?

Ok, searched some more, and now I know it's not possible in HD. Another option comes to mind. If I offload the P2 cards directly from the cam to an external HD. Will I be able to playback the contents of the HD from the cam? Thus being able to playback the HD contents through the component output?

It's not the firewire port that's crippled, because obviously the footage can go in just fine. But it's taking firewire HD input and transcoding it to HD component outputs that doesn't work. I don't know why it doesn't pass through.

Same difference, what I meant was that Panny crippled the abilities of what the Firewire connection is capable of. I mean, there's Firewire capabilities that Panny decidec not to impliment, if it's internal to the camera or the port itself, what I mean is the same out come, the Firewire port has been limited in it's implimentation as to what it's true capabilities are. Not bridging the gap between the FW port and the compoent port, no matter where it physcially disconnects, is still in my mind "crippling the FW port", not the physical port, but in it's abilities.

I believe Jan did say something about heat, so if that's the issue, then it wouldn't be "crippling", it just wouldn't be possible. I wish it were, obviously.

Yeah, heat, it's always something. It's like my Grandpa Rosannadanna always used to say, if it's not fish in your shoes it's... Oh, never mind...

My question is, if it can do the convertion from a P2 card to component, I don't understand how going from a FW port to a component port would creat MORE heat than that? If the cause really is heat, what's the explination about where that heat comes from? They're already doing the pass-through from P2 cards to the componenet output. It's all the same MXF data. I don't see the mechanics in heat being the reason, aside from a sales excuse.

Sorry, don't mean to offend anyone, this is just my honest opinion. I don't buy heat as the cause. I'd love to know the REAL reason. I mean, P2 card, FW port, its the same MXF data stream, coming from a "data port" to an "analog port", right? It baffles me, with my extensive professional IT background, to think a P2 port's data stream doesn't create as much heat as a FW port's data stream. Fact is, the data steam from both is perfectly identical. So its' not the port, but in the conversion of an MXF data stream, so how does the conversion differ between the two? They can go from FW to P2 card, if it that is possible, and you can go from P2 card to component, it makes no sense to tell me that there's some extra conversion creating more heat.

But, I'm sure we'll never know the truth, and be stuck with what we have...

I still insist the FW port has been very crippled by Panny, as Jan told me that you can physically put Native mode down the FW cable, but it's not the standard 60hz signal of video, and third party manufactuers would have to match the proprietory signal. So what? Let them! It's not that difficult! Build it, and they will make devices for it! History shows us that.

Just my 2 cents...

So, can any of you guys confirm my original question... whether I'm supposed to be able to output a DV timeline via firewire to the HVX and out via component? I'm able to do so via S-video, but not component. I've only read posts that say you can't do it with an HD timeline, but the answer on DV is vague.

I'm a beginner guys, so sorry if this is a dumb question. Any light you could shed would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Carlos
