Dumb Qustions from a Newb

First of all this is my first post here. I've learnt so much since discovering this forum yesterday so thank you all.

I own a Canon XM2 and have just upgraded to a XH A1 camera. So far I’m really pleased with it but when compared to the XM2 it’s like being asked to fly the Millenium Falcon. For me at least anyway.

I’ve filmed a handful of weddings and a couple of small corporate videos to date and want to use both cameras. Especially for weddings. I cannot edit in HD right now and since my XM2 isn’t HD anyway then SD has to be my format of choice. Here are my questions.

  • When using both the XM2 & A1, should I set the A1 screen size to 720x576 or leave it at 1080? (at 25F mode)

  • Tape Stock: I use Sony Premium dv tapes (orange). I assume I cannot record HD on these in the future? If I did what's the difference?

I apologise for the novice questions but this really is all new to me and so far I’m winging it but I'm getting so much joy out of this.

depends what you want. 1080 is hdv and 16:9. i dont know if xm2 has a progressive mode. anyway, you could edit multiple formats in a single timeline. maybe you want to make sure you use the same aspect ratio on both too: 16:9 or 4:3. i guess you just have to read up a bit because if you dont know any of this, its not gonna be explained in a snap... there is loads of explanations on the web...

you could record hdv with the sony premiums. no worries. some people say that they give more dropouts than the hdv-cassettes and some people say they dont. there is some threads on this on the forum. do a search...
but basically, the important thing is to stick with one brand and not mix the different tape lubricants. i use sony premiums and sony hdv- tapes myself on my xha1. works great.

good luck

Thanks for the advice Teupaksa. I wonder why SD is an option at all then? Having said that, while ever I'm working with both the XM2 and A1 I'll stick with SD.

I do use the XM2 in Widescreen mode. 720x576
