Dumb Canon T4I question

Hi all,

I just got a T4i and I wanted to use Movie Mode, Aperture Priority (Av). When I do, I cannot set and hold any aperture at all. It just jumps around based on the amount of light, as if I were in "P" mode.
Same thing with Tv mode in Movie mode. Can't set any shutter speeds.
Yet in Still mode, the Av and Tv settings work exactly as they should.
Am I crazy? Am I doing something wrong?

Also, does anyone know how to update the firmware? Can't find it on the Canon site.

Happy New year!

Kelly

Use the manual (M) mode...then you can set all of your settings manually, including shutter, aperture, ISO settings...etc. With a lot of the DSLRs movie modes the dial has to be in a certain position to maintain full control over those parameters. For Canon it is M mode. The T3i and T2i just had a movie mode on the dial. The t4i is different with its switch up to engage the movie shooting....so M is the place to get full control.

It will shoot video in those modes, but M is the place for full control. In the other modes, it probably acts like a Nikon D5100 and the camera takes over for you. Just shoot manual...because when shooting video, you don't want the camera messing with your aperture after you've set the shutter or the shutter being jacked up after you've set the aperture. For 24P...common practice is to go into manual mode set the shutter to 1/50 or 1/60...and leave it fixed. Adjust your aperture and ISO according to the dof you desire and to achieve the correct exposure. Outdoors at daylight...you would of course mostly be at ISO 100 and may need ND filters as well so you don't have to stop down the lens in huge amounts.
Some will adjust the shutter speed a bit as well, but be careful with that...depending on what type of motion you want the scene to have.

Thanks...but is the camera malfunctioning?
Should it not work in those modes?

No.

It's not malfunctioning.

The implementation of video in the Canons (and most other brands) is such that if you are in ANY mode except MANUAL when you press the video record button you get FULL AUTOMATIC ONLY. The only way to set aperture, shutter, and ISO and have those STAY where you set them is to do video in MANUAL mode.

For an article I've written on shooting video in manual on the Canons, send me a PM with your email address and I'll send it to you. Sounds like you need something like that to get you "rolling".

If it will fit in the message editor I'll post it as a new thread. Look for "Systematic Manual Settings In Video Mode On Canon DSLRs" in a day or two. It's on another computer and I'll have to post it from there.

Edit: It's done and posted.
