Dubbing Tape to PC

I am having problems with connecting my hvx to my computer. I have both the firewire connection and the usb connection ready to hook up. I didn't get p2 cards yet b/c I'm waiting for the 32 gig to come out so right now I'm using mini dv tapes.

I have the hvx plugged in with the usb right now and the pc is not recognizing it. I have it in PC/DUB mode and tape is selected but nothing pops up on the pc. What options do I have to select on the hvx to use the firewire connect and which options do I have to select for the usb mode?

After I get the camera connected I'm guessing I just open Windows Media Player or Sony Vegas and import the files. How exactly do I dub the tape on to a pc file? I really appreciate all of the help I can get. I have 2 IMPORTANT projects I have to edit and I'm ready and willing. Thanks again!

Well, I think you have stumped the Stars here. I am looking forward to this answer as well. My suspicion is that there is no way to go directly from the HVX200 to a PC without an interfacing piece of hardware. Which means... take the mini-dv tape out of the camera with the great effects and image enhancements and put it into an old LINEAR EDITOR.
Barry, have you had enough turkey yet, we are waiting on tenterhooks.

Do you have an NLE installed? Juse use your editing program and capture the tape via firewire. You can't just dub tapes to PC files you need a non linear editing system to do this. Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas, Avid and Edius seem to be the main PC choices these days.

USB mode can be useful with P2 cards but it's of no use to you now.

The USB port is only available when using the camera as a P2 card reader. Since you don't have any cards, USB is not available.

To transfer the tape to the computer you need to put the HVX in TAPE mode, connect via firewire, and go into VCR mode (not PC/DUB). Then use your nonlinear editing software to capture the footage from the HVX.

Thank you so much for the responses!

Ok, so I figured out that I can only use firewire and I plugged the camera in to my firewire device. The computer makes a sound like it recognizes a new device but no icons and nothing else shows up. Then when I enter Adobe Premier and Sony Vegas they both do not recognize a device connected correctly. Vegas says "Please connect device" and Premier says "Unable to connect to capture driver."

Now what do I do?

(In Windows XP at least..) Can you see the camera in "My computer" .. it should appear like a drive. - If you double click and "open" the camera's icon, you shoudl get a video window where you can see the signal from the camera (so the video when the tape is playing, or a live picutre in "camera" mode).

Does this work?

Also, What version of Windows?

Also check if the IEEE 1394 Network Bridge is installed. If it is, then the ICF (Internet Connection Firewall) may be blocking access to the camera. Simply right-click on the Network Bridge in the Network Connections control panel and uninstall it.

I'm hearing about this msdv driver but I couldn't find a reliable site with the msdv.sys file to download. Do you think that could be the problem? You have no idea how much this sucks.. having a video that you can't do a thing to. I disabled the 1394 connection and tried to connect to the hvx but no love. HELP!!!!
