Dubbing 720 24pn to DvcPro HD tape via Final Cut 6

Hi everyone,

I just came back from a shoot that used a Varicam and a HVX200. The show is a National Geographic show and they require all the footage to be tape based, I wanted to dump the P2 footage into Final Cut 6 and then output via firewire or HD SDI to a Panasonic AJ-HD1400 deck. The post production company says this will not work, because Final Cut does not flag frames back to the deck, so the footage will become 59.98 and they won't be able to cut it in a 23.98 timeline on their Avid. I have the most current version of Final Cut 6 with a Blackmagic Decklink card.

Is this true, or is there a work around for copying the p2 footage to DVC Pro HD tape while retaining the flagged frames so the footage on tape stays 23.98?

Thanks in advance,

According to the Panasonic website the 1400 only records in 1080/59.94, 1080/50i, 720/60p, 720/59.94p and 720/50p.

Hind sight is always 20/20. If you knew you were going to dub to tape for delivery you probably should have taken that into consideration going into the project and determining frame rates...specifically not using pn. If I am not mistaken shooting in pn means no flagged frames just true 23.94 (24p) so there are not flagged frames to add back during the dub process.

If I am wrong I hope someone else will chime in.

It really has nothing to do with shooting P2 in native mode or not, but getting Final Cut to output a 23.98 timeline to the HD1400 deck. I shot different frame rate during the project depending upon the look I wanted, so I couldn't stay in one frame rate. Anyway I believe I found the solution and recorded the 23.98 timeline to tape with flags intact. I will confirm it when the post department gets it into the Avid.
