dslr rig comparison

are there any nice rigs that allow you to have rails that are like under $100?

My budget is so low and i just bought a used glidcam :(

Will the GH1 let you run a external SD LCD monitor? or will it only work for playback and wont actually ouput an image during recording?

I'm looking at getting a GH1 or a 7d and if the GH1 can't do this then it looks like i'm getting the 7d.

That's a pretty funky rig. Where's that top handle from?

Hi Vince top handle from old Panasonic ENG camera (model 800). :)

Base body its done!

Very nice compact rig. I like it a lot. Is there room for a follow focus?

What zoom lens is that? Tokina I think...but what mount and can you control the aperture?

2 x Tripod Connector, 15mm rods and lens gears from Shoot35.

323 Quick Release Adapter from http://www.manfrotto.com.

Follow focus, handles and grip rods from Redrock Micro. (Would get the Shoot35 CINEfocus now but it wasn't available when I needed one.)

Kestrel Mattebox from True Lens Services. (Connector to the Rods clamp handmade from a aluminium L-profile.)

A Hama Rubber Lens Hood Telematic S flipped backwards as a long donut to stop stray light in combo with Cokin P Adaptor rings. This to deal with the axial movement on my FDs when focusing.

RS-4 R-Strap from BlackRapid so I can let go of the rig and let it hang comfortably when I shooting hand held.

Then I use a set of ND filters from Formatt Filters (not shown here).

Here is another alternative.

The mini-halo rig is pretty awesome. There is plenty of threading on the top to mount mics/lights/monitors/etc. And you're able to set it on the ground!

I am looking for a handheld rig, don't want shoulder support. I've been looking at all the handheld rigs posted in this forum and in general I think most are overpriced, even for pros. One that looks very good for what I want and isn't expensive is the Manfrotto Fig Rig:

Someone with time and tools could DIY one based on a car or truck steering wheel.

I finally finished fabricating a combination of various bits that resulted in the correct orientation of my GH1 camera & lens exactly centered vertically & horizontally in relation to a Vocas/Century matte box I bought years ago to use with the full-size broadcast cam I sold late last year.

To adapt the small GH1 to a matte box designed for a much larger video camcorder I made a special bracket out of aluminum square U-channel, drilled & tapped several holes, and added two SLIK quick release plates: A small one (DQ-10) to mount the cam to the bracket & a larger one (DQ-20) to mount the entire matte box assembly to a mini-slider dolly or tripod.

Today I made one last required modification to the bracket under the camera: I cut a rounded slot in it so I could access the set screw that secures the rails to the matte box plate (see close-up).

The matte box & rails can now work with lenses of various sizes & shapes (I currently own the Lumix f1.7 20mm, an old Nikon f1.2 55mm, and the kit 14-140mm zoom). I also have an extra set of longer 15mm-dia. tubular rails I can swap-in if I use a very long lens. As you know, aside from shading the lens, the matte box allows me to use 4"x4" filters (I own a few), but since they're expensive they can be rented, too.

Last week I finally received the 77mm Fader ND I ordered from LightCraft Workshop via eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Fader-ND-Filter...ewItemQQptZCamera_Filters?hash=item20ae329f45

Last week also I received a "french flag" for the matte box from these guys in India via eBay (_much_ cheaper than ordering it from a US supplier). It's a perfect fit.:
http://www.thecinecity.com/tcc/product.php?productid=197&cat=248&page=2

Now that I have this rig working I'll buy one more of the larger-size SLIK DQ-20 quick release plates that matches the larger one in this rig so I can quickly swap the camera & matte box between the 32" mini-slider dolly tracks I built last month and my other tripod. I'll probably leave the 2nd QR plate mounted on that tripod permanently.

The "Zaza" DIY mini-slider dolly cost me approx. $125 in parts; info of course is in this thread on DVXuser:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=145701&highlight=zaza

The mic set-up in the photo is just a serving suggestion. An external audio recorder or wireless mic receiver can be mounted on the handle/bracket instead of the shotgun mic if required. (The handle/bracket was $13 from Adorama in NYC.)

Later I'll probably add a relatively inexpensive follow-focus for use with manual lenses once I decide which one to get.

Anyway, glad that's done. Now I gotta get out and do some shooting. :cheesy:
