DSLR Remote

So Today someone sent me a link to the Switchtronix DSLR remote.

Being that it is insanely over priced I'm trying to think of a work around for this guy. It says it merely uses an infrared pulse to trigger the cameras video record mode function.

This next question is a bit mental, but:
Can you program a normal TV Remote control to start it?

If I could just figure out the pulse pattern that the switchtronix device sends out, I'm sure it can be replicated for $10.

Any Ideas?

There are some cheap ones on eBay that supposedly can trigger video - ones that work with the cam's own infrared sensor and ones that come with a receiver+transmitter - that cost a lot less than that. Not vouching for any of them, just wanted to let you know that there are other (cheaper) options.
