DSLR Operating Noise

I recently picked up a 7D on Black Friday, when the camera is in video mode with image stabilization on there is a lot of camera operation noise. I can hear it from a couple feet away... I know that some amount of operation noise is normal, but is this amount normal? When IS is off there is almost no sounds coming from the camera. I am using the kit lens.

Interesting, I don't recall hearing IS noise on my kit lens (although it has admittedly been a long time since I used it). I know one of the selling points of USM lenses are the super fast and silent autofocus, perhaps IS noise is normal on the cheaper kit lens?

Also, moving this to the APS-C section, as it is Canon-specific.

My EF-S 17-85/IS kit lens is nearly silent but the IS on the much more expensive EF300/4L IS is quite loud. All my USM lenses are nearly silent when focusing, but IS has nothing to do with USM.

I'm aware that IS is not related to the focus motors, but I was wondering if the expensive USM lenses also use quieter and more expensive IS motors. Guess not.

Meanwhile, to the OP, I don't know what to say. Try a different lens and see if it still does it?

The image stabilization can be fairly loud. This is normal. It depends on the lens.

The Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II kit lens that came with my T2i is effectively silent. The image stabilization on my Canon 70-200mm f/4 L IS lens is definitely audible.
