DSLR for No Reservations and Wild Within

Howdy,
This forum has been a really helpful place for me throughout the years and I thought I should share some perspective from my side of the business. In addition to a few other shows, I work on No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain and The Wild Within with Steven Rinella. Both great shows that are making awesome use of DSLRs in the field and color correct in post. I'm also filling it up with some post production technique stuff.

Here's a link to my blog with some real world examples of using gear in a travel/survival situation. Updates will keep coming. I look forward to comments and questions from newbies, students and pros alike. Thanks DVXUSERs.

Pretty big fan of the show, watched them all.

I have a question though. I watched the behind the scenes show, and there appeared to be no sound people involved. On another episode Anthony mentioned "The second a sound guy shows up, I'm leaving" or something to that effect.

How is sound managed? Especially for something that seems relatively "run and gun"

Sound is tricky with Bourdain, Rinella and our DPs really pull 2bl duty with receivers in their pockets and Trans on our subjects. Producers are always helpful keeping batteries handy and switching out units when something goes down. We love soundguys and have used them to good effect on Brewmasters, another series of ours. With Bourdain and other intimate shows, we sacrifice the expertise of a sound department to gain access and intimacy with our subjects and locations.

Thanks respondants. Well, we love the living hell out of our shows and I've gotten more than my share of info from this tight community. There will be more to come on doing post/shooting work for Bourdain and Rinella and Brewmasters. We'll talk more cameras, motion control, timelapse, plateshots, packing MREs etc. That shameless plug again is: zpzwatercooler.tumblr.com . Send those questions and enjoy the show AND let's all keep shooting like nuts!

I don't care how you keep gear dry, what I really want to know is how your crew stays "dry" shooting No Reservations?
Aside from the possible on set buzz, what's the dslr application? Some 5d stuff for promo/b-roll? Are you running them side by side eng cameras or just for specific moments?
Love NR by the way, watch it every chance I get.

7D is mostly for food porn, timelapse and b-roll, underwater too. In scene stuff is typically EX 3 or a Z7. As for sobriety, the guys all take the shot pretty seriously, but there's sometimes an opportunity to relax at the end of the day. I however, would drink Pancro if there was an olive in it :)

Thanks. I really enjoyed the segment explaining your use of the lenses. Pretty interesting stuff. Also, I'm checking out that cage right now, it looks like it might be a little heavy but I'll do some more research. Appreciate it.

Awesome, thank you so much for sharing! Always loved NR from the start, and more so once I knew it was shot with DSLR! Looking forward to surfing the blog.

Man, what a fun gig for you - always dug Bourdain, and his essay on salon.com regarding the first Beirut shoot had my wife in tears. The dude definitely brings some depth & soul that is lacking in most unscripted shows. And his cook books are funny as hell. thanks for the blog!

I read the DV artcile covering "No Reservations" production methods with great interest and I was impressed with how good the show looks considering how you shoot with such a small crew and limited opportunities for supplemental lighting. I'm not an avid watcher of the show, but I really dig all the good food and far-flung locales, as well as Anthony's WTF attitude and punk rock ruminations from his time hanging out in the Bowery in it's heyday. He'll go almost anywhere for almost any reason. The food shots from a recent show filmed in Turkey were excellent.
