DSLR footage playback quality - Quicktime vs Windows Media Player

Has anybody noticed there's a HUGE difference in quality when playing back .movs in QT player and WM player?

I was playing back my mov raw footage in WM player and the colors were vibrant with nice contrast. I playback in QT and it was VERY noticeably flat. Does anybody have an explanation for this?

I wonder which one gives a truer representation of the footage - probably QT?

Your best bet would be to get a good calibrated monitor and play it back over the hdmi out of the camera and then compare that to the footage in WMP and Quicktime and maybe try VLC as well.

Thanks guys.
Yeah I've never been able to figure out the washed out issues with QT.
I don't have monitor yet, I have to really look into that.

I just tested a clip in WMP Quicktime VLC and Premiere

The clip looked the same in WMP and VLC
It looked washed out in Quicktime
and in Premiere it looked better than quicktime but still a tiny bit washed out compared to VLC and WMP

Hope that helps

I had washed out issues with VLC and had to set nvidia control panel to accept full dynamic range.

But still, Premiere Pro shows my footage a little bit less contrasty. I wonder why...

Well Quicktime shows the whole 0-255 gamma range, WMP and VLC don't (only 16-1235, picture looks contrasty, but shadows and highs are burned out).

I honestly like the colors on Quicktime a whole lot better, it's pretty scary how different they are on FLV (if FLV is the true representation). Quicktime seems to make the colors look a bit more realistic/filmic, FLV seems to make it more contrasty or odd. Are you guys sure that Quicktime isn't the true player? Because in all my videos, FLV is the one that ups the contrast like heck and makes details not visible at all, Quicktime represents what I seem to have seen on the DSLR itself. But FLV nor Quicktime seems to fix any quality issues I've been seeing, details are still blurry as crap either way *but not in a photograph of the same subject*.
