DSLR Audio help

Field audio recording! The more i research the less i can choose. Zoom H4n? Tescam dr100? Beachtek or Juicedlink ? ...

500 euro +/- for à recorder and mic? My opinion sofar is ntg2 + h4n but please feel free to post your favorit option. Any help is welkom.

And what Will i gain by using à preamp mixer like à juicedlink ?

I have an h4n but i recommend you consider the tascam as the h4n sucks battery power VERY fast.

As for sound quality of zoom and tascam they are both ok. Not the greatest but sufficient.

From what I've seen, the preamp mixers like juicedlink are primarily to help those who intend to use the internal audio on the camera to record. The audio in camera isn't so great as you are aware, mostly because of noisy preamps and AGC (on some models). If you feed it a hot signal from an external amp and disable AGC, the audio can be decent. That's where these preamps come in.

If you are using a good external recorder, like the Zoom or Tascam, you can plug the mic into it directly and be fine.

Well is did some research on all options and à specialy the tescam is not adviced becouse its very unreliable file management. It crashes and corupts files à lot.

So à audio mixer wont do me any good becouse i have à 7D witch cant run ML?

H4N or something similar, you can mount to the hot shoe for practicality if you don't have a rig. I have been using the NTG3 lately and would give it nothing but praise, though that may be out of your budget - also used NTG2 and they are nice enough.

Well, before you take the H4n/NTG-2 plunge, there is an issue of which you should be aware: these two devices don't play nice together. In fact, the NTG-2, while a nice-sounding mic and a great deal for the price, is going to struggle with just about any hand-held recorder. It has a bit lower of an output than other shotgun mics, and the weak pre-amps of the H4n cannot drive it without pushing the gain past 75% (this adds lots of noise, and even wide open get the signal not quite to ideal levels). Even the DR-100 has issues trying to drive an NTG-2.

There's an entire forum here at DVXUser dedicated to audio, and you'll find several helpful stickies there with lots of good information about mics and portable recorders.

Sorry, not tried the both together. Normally have a sound recordist on hand to operate my macbook pro with an apogee audio interface (which has more than enough gain and sounds just insanely good).

Does anyone know if there any mods to the H4n that will let it take a battery plate for HVX200 batteries or something similar? The built-in mic is good but the preamps on the XLR are pretty weak, and using phantom power drains the battery very quickly.
