Dropped Frames on Tape...?

So....a while back I shot a gig on my A1....then when I tried to capture and playback on the camera I would run into dropped frames. (even on the camera when it was unplugged from the computer)

Therefore I cleaned the heads (sent it to canon) and bought an HV20 for a deck. I then shot another gig with my A1...now i am trying to capture the footage but am running into the same problem, this time, during playback with the HV20. (even when I unplug it!)

Any Ideas?

If you shot HDV, are you dropping individual frames or small segments? If it's small segments, it's probably a tape dropout. The fact that it showed up on both the A1 and HV20 makes me think it's a bad spot on the tape. What kind of tape stock are you using?

I am using Sony DVM63 (For HDV/DV) Its white and maroon packaging.

So its "stuttering" on random spots on the hv20 (unplugged).....then I took it out and it played in the A1 and it plays fine.....?? Its gotta be something on the tapes, because my Hv20 plays other tapes fine....but I have two tapes from this gig that it can't seem to play with dropping frames. Yet then those same tapes play fine in the A1...?

(The 24f flashes when it stutters, during playback.)

Sounds like you have a head alignment problem on one of the two Canon's. Since you sent the A1 to Canon for service, I'm going to assume that they checked the alignment. That would mean the HV20 is a little out of spec and when it hits a soft spot on the tape it can't read the data. You might want to return the HV20 if you just got it, or send it to Canon for service. It'll save you headaches later.

Would it do this on any tapes? The HV20 plays other tapes fine...its just these two it seems to have trouble with

Not necessarily. If your tapes play fine in the A1 but not in the HV20, the heads on the HV20 could be slightly out of alignment compared with the A1... underscore "slightly". In most cases tapes from one will play fine in the other, but if the tape has a spot on it where the signal is for some reason marginal and not as strong, a unit with misaligned heads will have more difficulty getting that signal and could drop frames.

Now, I'm not saying that either of your cams have misaligned heads. It's just a possibility.
